"Great homily and very engaged congregation"

"Until the end of the 18th century, the inhabitants of the seaside district of Catanzaro still did not have a place to exercise their faith, so, after the disastrous earthquake of 1783, the Cassa Sacra suppressed the monastic orders and founded new churches to spread the Catholic faith.
One of these was created right in Lido, initially organizing a chapel obtained from a warehouse, later building a real church, finished in 1832.
With a bull of 14 November 1889, Bishop Bernardo De Riso created it a parish, recognized with the Royal Exequatur of 31 January 1892.
Inside the church lies the statue of the Madonna of Porto Salvo, which, every year on the last Sunday of July, on the occasion of the patronal feast, is brought out and carried in procession to the port, where it is embarked and the procession continues along the coasts of Catanzaro, with numerous boats in tow.

Historical Notes
1700 - 1892 (construction of entire property)
In 1700, the Bishop of Catanzaro, Monsignor Rossi, commissioned the construction of a small church or chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Santa Maria di Porto Salvo. Until the end of the 18th century, Marina had no church. After the monastic orders were suppressed following the 1783 earthquake, churches of the Cassa Sacra were founded outside Catanzaro to foster faith. The fourth of these churches was assigned to Catanzaro Marina and operated first in a warehouse converted into a chapel and then, in 1832, in a small church built at the expense of the municipality. The church was created a parish by Bishop Bernardo De Riso with a papal bull dated November 14, 1889, and recognized with a Royal Exequatur dated January 31, 1892.
Description The church is located in Catanzaro Lido, with its main façade on Via Nazionale and its east side facing Piazza Anita Garibaldi. The façade is rectangular in shape with a gabled roof. It has three entrances, a central one and two smaller side entrances, covered by a portico with a three-triangular roof. The entrance is raised three steps above street level. On the façade, above the portico, are three large arched windows with stained glass windows that extend along the side elevations and illuminate the interior of the church. The main façade is decorated with two full-height lateral pilasters with simple capitals. The interior consists of a single nave ending in a semicircular apse. The triumphal arch and the apse are decorated with frescoes by local artists. Inside, the reinforced concrete trusses built during the 2004 restoration are visible."
