What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Castello Svevo Gravina is a site of historical interest, particularly for its connection to Emperor Federico II, but its frequent closure and state of disrepair are significant drawbacks. Visitors often find it charming when accessible, especially during events, but are disappointed by the lack of consistent access and development. The potential for restoration is noted, but currently, visits are unpredictable.
"To start with, the site is normally closed. We could nevertheless enter luckily due to works undertaken that day.
The Castel was a favourite place of the emperor Federico II grace to the surroundings and building which got constructed under the supervision of the Florentine sculptor Fuccio. The building itself shows only little defensive structures and got used as hunting seat. It got heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1456 and subsequently decayed.
There has been done work in past to build access to the ruins and a parking place, which all is closed nowadays.
As this structure still has potential from my view and could get partially restored, it would be great if local and regional authorities realize this and take steps to awake the site from its hibernation.
4 stars for the site, the architectural details (which can be seen in Castel Del Monte in full beauty). Minus for the bad overall state regarding archeological care, closed status and obvious lack of vision of local and regional authorities to develop the site."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Focus on the exterior and the surrounding grounds for exploration. The idea of a historic castle can spark imagination, and you can create your own stories about knights and emperors. Pack snacks and drinks, as amenities within the castle grounds might be limited, especially outside of organized events. The key is to align your visit with a scheduled activity for the best chance of access and engagement.
🏛️ History Buffs
Be prepared for the reality of its current state – a site with significant potential but lacking in preservation and development.
