Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the imposing ruins of Castello di Zocco and its stunning panoramic views of Lake Trasimeno, especially at sunset. However, the castle's inaccessibility due to its privately owned and dilapidated state is a significant drawback, leaving many wishing for preservation and public access.

"The ruins of this castle, overlooking the lake between Monte del Lago and San Feliciano, fascinate anyone passing through. The construction site fence and various warning signs warn of the risk of collapse and falling rocks. Some sections of the walls, dating back to the 15th century, seem to remain standing defying all physical laws.

The castle is privately owned, and the last inhabitants, sharecroppers, left in the mid-20th century. Historian Giovanni Riganelli, on the "Magione Cultura" portal, explains that "in 1456, several Perugians apparently took refuge there to escape the plague that had broken out in the city," and adds that "by the end of the 18th century, the castle was largely in ruins."

In 2011, the owners of the Torre dei Lambardi in Magione presented a proposal for the restoration of Castel di Zocco. This is a particularly complex process, not only because of the significant investment required, but also because of the difficult balance needed to strike between restoring the historic walls and the economic valorization of the various buildings within, also in ruins. Aside from this unsuccessful attempt, there are currently no concrete initiatives aimed at safeguarding and enhancing this historic asset, so fascinating in its slow decline."

Giacomo Chiodini (GiacChio82)

"Zocco Castle. Built near Magione, Zocco Castle (13th century) dominates Lake Trasimeno from above. Over the centuries, it was the most powerful military settlement in the area, boasting seven towers, five of which remain today, three gates, and a massive defensive wall. Unfortunately, I found it closed and therefore not visible inside, and who knows if it will ever be possible to visit..."

Giorgio Bartolommei

"Beautiful on the horizon when you drive along the road that runs alongside it, beautiful even up close. Too bad for the gate with a padlock that blocks the entrances due to the risk of collapse, a work of this kind should have been protected at the time and could still be today, with targeted interventions, accessible to the people."
