What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Chiesa Madre San Leone Magno is a historically significant church in Castellana Grotte, praised for its valuable artworks including a late Gothic fresco, sculptures by Aurelio Persio, and paintings by Vincenzo Fato. While the recent interior restoration with white mortar has been noted by some as diminishing the original charm, the artistic treasures and historical depth of the church remain a draw for visitors interested in art and local heritage.
"Located in the historic center of Castellana Grotte, the mother church is dedicated to Saint Leo the Great. It was built in 1383, expanding an existing Romanesque church to which a Norman defensive tower was annexed, later converted into a bell tower. On the sides of the main façade are the statues of Leo the Great and John the Baptist, until then located inside the main altar, while on the gable is a sculpture of the Madonna Consolatrice. The interior of the recently restored church has certainly lost the aesthetic beauty of the bare stone, having been covered with white mortar."

"For art lovers, a tour of the historic center of the "City of Caves" is highly recommended. Among the must-see destinations is the Mother Church, dedicated to Pope Saint Leo the Great. It is the oldest in the city (dating back to the early 3rd century). It contains a beautiful late Gothic fresco, some valuable sculptures by Aurelio Persio (1518-1593)—one of which was recently expertly restored—and numerous paintings by the Castellana painter Vincenzo Fato (1705-1788). I also recommend visiting the nearby Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, also known as "Purgatory," where a well-preserved presbytery with an 18th-century high altar, made of carved and gilded wood, and numerous paintings and frescoes by the aforementioned Vincenzo Fato are preserved. If you then have the opportunity to meet the parish priest, Don Vito Castiglione Minischetti, then you're truly in luck! He is, in fact, the current consultant for ecclesiastical assets and sacred art of the diocese, as well as a fine and competent expert in the field."

"Looking at the exterior, you wouldn't expect a renovated interior with whitewash; this work hid the original stone and took away much of this church's charm. Where the stone remains, you can appreciate the beauty of an ancient building steeped in history. Of note is an ancient fresco at the entrance."
