"In the center of Carpi,
this little gem,
of ancient origins,
built in 752 AD and then rebuilt by Matilda of Canossa in the 12th century,
boasts a medieval façade and preserves, in a marble sarcophagus, the remains of the lord of Carpi,
Manfredo Pio I, the man who commissioned the construction of Palazzo Pio.
The vault above the main door is impressive and very beautiful.
Inside, there are frescoes depicting the crucifixion of Jesus with two centurions on either side,
the four Evangelists, the Annunciation, and the Adoration of the Magi.
The atmosphere is rather dark, but there's a sense of tranquility.
Few people know about it, so it's not crowded, which, on the one hand, is a good thing; you can visit it comfortably.
Two kind people offered to act as guides to help us appreciate this ancient place even more.
They explained to us that
It dates back to the Roman period; in fact, if you go outside, you can still see the external foundations with large stones.
Unfortunately, the work to restore the ancient part,
which today,
is underneath but not easily accessible, is too expensive.
It seems to have been built on the ruins of a Roman domus.
In any case, go see it if you're in the area.
It doesn't take long and it's beautiful."
