Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Museo del Carbone for its informative tours and the historical significance of the Grande Miniera di Serbariu, especially its role during WWII. The well-preserved Art Deco architecture and the insights into miners' lives are highlights. Some visitors note that only a small part of the mine is accessible and that English tours may not be available daily, especially during renovations.

"Informative tour of an important historic mine essential to the war effort during WWII! You don’t get to go deep into the mine but it’s more of a family friendly museum where you can walk through and see the different set ups and machinery used throughout the years."

David

"Beautiful museum with tour through underground tunnels which are partly recreated as an old coal mine and partly authentic to store and transport coal underground to prevent bombings in the war. The mine itself is largely flooded and was operative from the thirties till the sixties in the 20th century. Tours in Italian, French and English every day, best to contact tourist office for reservation and up to date timetables. Guide spoke fluently English and gave a lot of information of high quality. The underground tunnels were very well set up and very interesting. The collection and information panels of the museum are absolutely worth a visit (also in English). Would totally recommend if you are into (coal) (mining) history."

Mike Lahaye

"The entire surface site of the mine is in very good condition and you can wander around all of it though most buildings are inaccessible. The fascist period art deco buildings are lovely and in very good condition.

The old lamp room and miner's dry houses a good museum which has Italian and English descriptions for most exhibits.

The 'underground' tour explains most of the processes and machines the miner's used in context, but in some shallow tunnels that have been built to simulate work in the pit (which was at least 250m below)."
