What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the unique architecture and historical significance of the Canelli Underground Cathedrals, finding the cool underground environment a welcome escape. However, some reviews mention that tours can feel overly commercialized or like a 'show,' with guides lacking passion, and wine tastings sometimes falling short of expectations regarding quality or presentation.
"The cellars are beautiful but the tour is a bit "too much of a show" with the videos and loud music. Our guide was also a girl without passion or enthusiasm. It seems she was repeating something she learnt by heart, a script basically. So boring. The wine tasting at the end was also disappointing. The Metodo Classico was an open bottle that lost all its perlage and wasn't cold enough. The glasses are awful flutes. Better to use nicer flutes and then dont allow people to take them home, rather than gifting something extremely bad quality. The sparkletini is impossible to comment, just a commercial twist.
I guess quantity (around 10/12 millions bottles produced every year) doesn't equal to quality."

"Great sensory experience as you listen to the guide and walk through the wine-filled caves built below street level in Canelli! Movies on the wall, movies on the ceiling and many surprising facts and stories will be shared. Don't miss it! Especially not the wine tasting! The rose sparkling wine is second to none and they even have alcohol-free options for the kids!"

"Really worthwhile - excellent informative tour with a sommelier who spoke excellent English and delicious wines to taste. Particularly good on a hot day as it is so cool down there!"

The History and Architecture of the Underground Cathedrals
These cellars are not just functional spaces; they are architectural marvels that reflect the deep connection between the land and its people. The sheer scale, with some cellars extending for kilometers and holding millions of bottles, is awe-inspiring. The cool, constant temperature, typically between 12-15°C, and high humidity create the perfect microclimate for the slow, natural fermentation and aging process, especially for the Metodo Classico wines. Visiting these cathedrals offers a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to feel the history and dedication of generations of winemakers who worked in these unique environments.
While the primary function was wine storage and aging, the cathedrals also represent a significant historical and cultural asset for Canelli. They showcase a unique form of underground construction that was essential for the development of the local wine industry. Today, several wineries, most notably Bosca and Coppo, have opened parts of these historic cellars to the public, offering guided tours that blend historical insights with wine tasting experiences. This has transformed them into a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors eager to explore this hidden world beneath the surface.
Wine Tasting Experiences in Canelli
Beyond the classic Metodo Classico, you can also expect to taste other local specialties, such as the aromatic Moscato d'Asti and delightful rosé sparkling wines. Some wineries are also catering to a broader audience by offering alcohol-free options, ensuring that everyone can participate in the tasting experience. The setting itself enhances the tasting, as you savor the wines in the very environment where they were meticulously crafted and aged.
It's worth noting that while many visitors find the wine tastings to be a highlight, some reviews suggest that the quality and presentation can vary. Some guests have expressed disappointment with the wine served or the glassware used, particularly in larger, more commercial operations. Therefore, researching specific wineries and their tasting packages beforehand can help manage expectations and ensure a more satisfying experience.
