What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the museum for its fascinating exhibits, particularly Ötzi the Iceman, and its surprisingly comfortable seating. However, the lack of English translations for many permanent displays is a common drawback, with some finding the English audio guide basic. Occasional issues with broken interactive exhibits are also noted.
"Amazing museum!!! The scientific exhibitions are great and all but the true strength of this wonderful institution lies in its seats! Couches, benches, alcoves, stools, toilets, you name it... A well earned rest for your worn buttocks. Highly recommend, especially Exhibition 1, which has the comfiest of couches, in great quantity. The locker room is however also worth a visit, with some innovative and modern seating arrangements!
Less notable and important aspects include:
+ Interesting and informative displays and text
+ Mesmerising aquariums
+ Hysterical ant habitat
- Only the temporary exhibition had English translations, everything else is in German and Italian only
10/10, would sit here again."

"A well curated museum with lots of thought going into the exhibits. Unfortunately many of the most interesting only have explanations in German and Italian and the accompanying audio guide in English is simplistic and doesn't cover some of the more interesting displays, which was a great disappointment - especially as so many tourists from the US are now apparently embracing Bolzano. A number of the permanent interactive exhibits were broken, which was also a pity. Unfortunately, this museum, in common with most of the others in Bolzano no longer offers free entry on presentation of a Bolzano card, although there are some discounts available."

"Small museum with lots of scientific information about the Alps, really nice aquarium tank. Good for kids learning all the natural knowledge about the region."

Exploring Ötzi the Iceman
The preservation of Ötzi is extraordinary, allowing scientists to study his clothing, tools, tattoos, and even his last meal. The museum presents this information in an accessible way, though the primary languages for exhibit text are German and Italian. This means that while the visual displays are compelling, understanding the deeper context might require using translation apps or relying on the English audio guide, which some find to be basic.
Beyond the iceman himself, the museum delves into the geology and natural history of the Alps. This includes fascinating displays on the region's flora, fauna, and geological formations, providing a comprehensive understanding of the Alpine environment. The aquarium and ant habitat are also popular features, offering engaging insights into local ecosystems.
Navigating the Museum Experience
Despite the language barrier, the museum is praised for its thoughtful curation and the quality of its displays. One unexpected highlight frequently mentioned is the abundance of comfortable seating throughout the museum. Visitors have noted couches, benches, and alcoves, making it an ideal place to rest weary legs, especially during longer visits or when traveling with children. This focus on visitor comfort is a unique and appreciated aspect of the museum experience.
For those seeking a more guided experience, an English audio guide is available. However, some reviews suggest that it may be simplistic and not cover all the intricate details of the permanent exhibits. It's also worth noting that some interactive exhibits have been reported as being out of order, which can be a minor disappointment. Always check the museum's official website for the latest information on exhibit status and services.
