Built in the Lombard era, this gate was one of the eight main entrances to the medieval city and is today the only one remaining intact after the others were demolished between 1865 and 1868. "Port'Arsa is the only surviving gate, besides the Arch of Trajan, of the Lombard walls. The gate began to be built in the 6th-7th century, in the late Roman era. There were eight gates originally, Porta Somma near the Castle (it was later incorporated into the Rocca dei Rettori), Porta Rettore, Porta Nuova, Porta Gloriosa and Porta San Lorenzo, all demolished between 1865 and 1868.
