What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Bellagio Boat Service generally offers a good value for shared tours, providing a scenic introduction to Lake Como. Private tours are highly praised for their personalized service and beautiful boats, creating memorable experiences. However, some budget-conscious shared tours can be basic with limited explanations, and weather policies for private bookings require careful attention.
"You get what you pay for. Price $39.90
1. This is an inexpensive (relatively) tour and it provides a basic 90 minutes trip around parts of Lake Como.
2. We started in Bellagio and made stops in Varenna and Menaggio to pick up additional people. That was the first 30 minutes.
3. The rest of the trip went along the coast from Menaggio to Lenno and across water to the Bellagio side to see Vergonese and San Giovanni.
3. Bring earphones. The audio tour is available on cell phone after you scan a QR code on board.
4. Limited seat outside on the second level and front of the ship.
5. Bathroom on ship was broken the day we sailed (4-22-25).
6. No food are beverages are included and none are available for purchase.
For the price, it was not too bad."

"Only shared boat tour available from Menaggio for decent price, €39.90 per person. Also picks up/drops off from other locations along the way. Since we got on at Menaggio, we missed seeing the villas at Varenna (Cipressi & Monastero).
Beware, info on website has discrepancy between Italian & English pages. A point of confusion is the pick up point in Menaggio. The voucher & web site list different locations with different corresponding GPS coordinates. Thankfully, they can be reached by Whatsapp for questions. Correct pick up spot is:
Viale Benedetto Castelli 5, Menaggio. (Same pier with AC boat sign.)
They announced there's drinks bar on board but I didn't check it out.
Overall, we enjoyed the boat tour."

"Booked the 1 hour sunset private tour. It was a ‘no frills’, very average tour with minimal explanations and information about the villas and sights. It was pouring rain and freezing cold, but the company would not provide a refund as they said the boat has an undercover section so we would be “protected”. They did make an effort to reschedule with us, but said if the wind picked up later than the time we were originally booked for, we would receive no refund or be rescheduled. So we begrudgingly went and sat huddled together under an old blanket and went around the grey and gloomy lake. Complete waste of money. Definitely book the higher end private tours that guarantee wet weather cancellation refunds - this was the most disappointing purchase of our entire trip."

Choosing Your Lake Como Boat Experience
For a more personalized and luxurious experience, private boat tours are highly recommended. These can range from a few hours to a full day and can be customized to include stops for lunch at renowned lakeside restaurants, visits to specific villas, or simply more time to soak in the scenery. Companies like Bellagio Boat Service are known for their excellent service and beautiful classic wooden boats, offering a true taste of 'La Dolce Vita'. When booking a private tour, always clarify what's included, especially regarding weather cancellations and potential villa entrance fees.
Beyond organized tours, renting a small boat to drive yourself is also an option for those seeking ultimate freedom. This allows you to explore at your own pace, discover hidden coves, and create your own itinerary. However, it's essential to be comfortable navigating on the water and to book these rentals in advance, especially during peak season.
Bellagio: The Pearl of Lake Como
From Bellagio, you have easy access to the ferry system, making it an ideal base for day trips to other iconic towns like Varenna and Menaggio. Many boat tours, both shared and private, depart from or include stops in Bellagio, allowing you to experience the lake's beauty from the water. Don't miss the chance to wander through the beautiful gardens of Villa Melzi, which offer a serene escape and exquisite lake vistas.
When visiting Bellagio, consider enjoying a leisurely lunch by the water or a delightful gelato while strolling along the promenade. The town truly embodies the romantic and elegant charm that Lake Como is famous for, making it a highlight of any trip.
Navigating Lake Como: Beyond the Boat
For those arriving at Lake Como, the nearest major airports are Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Linate (LIN), and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY). From these airports, you can take a train or bus to Como city or Lecco, and then connect to ferries or buses to reach your chosen lakeside town. Renting a car is an option, but be aware that parking in the charming, narrow streets of lakeside villages can be challenging and expensive. Many visitors find that once they reach their base town, they can rely on ferries and walking to get around.
When planning your itinerary, consider the 'La Dolce Vita' cruise concept, which emphasizes enjoying the Italian lifestyle with scenic boat rides, delicious food, and visits to beautiful villas. This approach encourages a more relaxed pace, allowing you to truly savor the beauty and culture of Lake Como.
