What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Trenino Verde offers a charming, nostalgic train ride through scenic Sardinian landscapes, particularly enjoyable for train enthusiasts and families. While the vintage experience is a highlight, some visitors note the train's loudness, long stops, and primarily Italian-language tours as drawbacks. Planning for specific excursions is recommended for a more tailored experience.
"A fun train ride to Lanusai in nostalgic carriages on the Trenino Verde.
The only thing worth seeing was Lanusai. Spending the hours there until the return journey was tedious. The place has nothing to offer. Buses run to Arbatax station from the village square."

"Nice tour to Gairo on the weekends. Unfortunately, you only buy the tickets and then have a four-hour layover in Gairo. We actually wanted to go to Gairo Vecchio, but our guide, whom we asked, misunderstood us. We should have booked a group beforehand. It wasn't a problem, though, as we were simply included… just a different tour, including one to a fantastic grotto that can't be found anywhere on Google. It cost an extra €78 for two adults (we didn't mind), and we also got to do a lot of sightseeing.
Points deducted for the exclusively Italian tour, but we had volunteer translators who helped us tremendously. Another point deducted for the rather long ride on the very loud, squeaky train with many long stops. Okay, it's a heritage railway, but the undercarriages could use some greasing.
Still, a nice day trip."

The Charm of Heritage Railways
While the experience is charming, it's important to manage expectations. As a museum train, the ride can be quite loud and squeaky, and long stops are an integral part of the journey. This is part of its authentic appeal for enthusiasts. For families, particularly those with young train fans, it's an absolute delight. The novelty of the old-fashioned train is captivating for children, making it a memorable day trip.
Beyond the train ride itself, the destinations offer opportunities for exploration. Towns like Lanusei serve as layover points, providing a chance to experience local life. For those seeking more unique adventures, specialized tours to places like Gairo Vecchio or hidden grottos are available, though these often require advance booking and may come with additional costs.
Navigating Trenino Verde Tours and Tickets
For those interested in off-the-beaten-path experiences, such as visiting Gairo Vecchio or discovering hidden grottos, pre-booking a group tour is highly recommended. This ensures a tailored itinerary and can sometimes include unique discoveries not found on standard maps. Be aware that these specialized tours may incur extra fees, as seen with an excursion costing an additional €78 for two adults.
It's also worth noting that the tours are predominantly conducted in Italian. While some travelers have found volunteer translators helpful, it's wise to be prepared for this language aspect. The overall experience is about embracing the nostalgic journey, so understanding the operational nuances, like the longer stops and the train's characteristic sounds, is key to enjoying this unique Sardinian adventure.
