What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Ancona Port is a functional ferry hub with significant historical landmarks like the Arch of Trajan. While the port itself is criticized for lacking amenities and having a confusing ticket process, the ferry journeys are generally positive, and the city offers historical charm and scenic sunset views.
"Easy access to the port but there is no where for the passengers to seat or use a toilet after you left the ticket offices where they located at the other side of the port ,"

"Ancona Port is a disgrace! We caught a SNAV ferry from Ancona to Split and SNAV were great, the ship was modern, clean, escalators up to Level 7 reception to obtain your cabin key. Staff were friendly and the process was smooth.
Our experience at the port prior to boarding was dreadful. I had read that even though you buy a ticket online you have to obtain a boarding pass at a completely different place (Biglietteria) to where you board the ferry at the Port Authority. This was only from reading TripAdvisor and google reviews as there is literally no information provided about this with your ticket which is also in Italian. There is at least a free shuttle [bus no 20] to take you between the two places. We got our boarding passes first [need to show passports] then got the shuttle with bags to the shabby port. Then had our luggage stored at the port with left luggage prior to boarding. Luggage storage is free for passengers, show your boarding pass.
There is minimal seating at the port. You need to store luggage then walk into town and sit at a cafe until you can board. The port is in a disgraceful state for such a busy port. Toilets are only accessible with a key code into a locked building that is not evident to anyone. The key code is not written above the code pad. Many elderly folk had trouble accessing the toilet.
Many passengers [I would say at least every 2nd one in the queue to board] were turned away because they had not known about having to check in a kilometre down the road to obtain their boarding pass. Stressed people were now rushing to catch the shuttle bus and worrying they would miss their ferry. The port staff/guards who carry guns and stand around smoking prior to processing passengers for boarding were unfriendly, unhelpful and unprofessional. The ferry companies should lobby to make Ancona port a much better customer experience for their passengers. On arriving in Split the port is the opposite, just a short walk down the esplanade in safe walking areas to lots of cafes and a beautiful scenic port. Be very well informed if you need to catch a ferry from Ancona Port."

Navigating Ferry Travel from Ancona
To mitigate this, a free shuttle bus (No. 20) connects the ticket office and the boarding terminals. It's essential to factor in ample time for this process, ideally arriving 2-3 hours before departure. Be prepared for minimal amenities at the port itself; seating is scarce, and toilet access can be problematic. Many travelers recommend waiting in a comfortable cafe in the city center before proceeding to the port.
Despite these logistical challenges, ferry companies like SNAV are often praised for their modern and clean vessels, making the sea journey itself a pleasant experience once you're onboard.
Ancona's Rich Historical Tapestry
Beyond these prominent landmarks, the city's old town, crowned by the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, harbors many reminders of its long and varied past. Founded by Greek settlers, Ancona has seen periods of Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian influence, each leaving its mark on the city's culture and architecture.
While often described as a 'gritty port city,' Ancona offers more than just transport connections. Exploring its historic center reveals ancient monuments, mosaics, and hidden trattorias, providing a glimpse into a less-trodden Italian experience.
Experiencing the Adriatic Charm
For those seeking coastal beauty, Ancona offers access to beaches like Passetto Beach. The waterfront areas, particularly around sunset, provide stunning views and a chance to relax. Restaurants like 'Desiderio al Molo 71' are noted for offering excellent food alongside spectacular sunset vistas over the sea, making it a popular spot for visitors.
Beyond the immediate port area, the region of Marche, of which Ancona is the capital, is known for its natural beauty, including beaches and opportunities for activities like boat rentals for exploring the coastline.
