What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find Porta Cerere to be a grand and historically significant gateway to Anagni, appreciating its neoclassical architecture and the detailed coat of arms. It's seen as a beautiful introduction to the town's charming streets and historic buildings, though parking and obstructed views can be minor drawbacks.
"Nice town with a lot of old buildings and churches. Definitely see the palace which has an audio tour. You can also find nice little restaurants hidden in the small narrow streets."

"d Anagni you can breathe the air of Rome, with that typical Roman decadence that only the travertine present in the town can give. And you can breathe the air of Rome not only for the 4 Popes who won elected but also in the names such as that of the access gate to the Casilina, namely Porta Cerere.
The gate remodeled over the years was connected to the mighty walls of the city and is made up of blocks of travertine surmounted by an architrave with trigriffs and two imperial eagles.
In the center stands the coat of arms of the city with the eagle grasping the lion, the papal keys and the imperial mantle."

"The Porta Cerere stands at the western entrance to the city and is named after the Latin deity of the same name; an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess likely stood nearby. The old gate was renovated in 1564 and was set further back than the current one, but it finally fell into ruin during the Napoleonic period. The new gate, designed in the neoclassical triumphal arch style, was erected in 1841 based on a design by engineer Ernesto Martinelli.
The gate has always been a privileged entrance to the city. Travertine ashlar decorates both the interior and exterior of the monument. Two pilasters support an architrave with triglyphs and a corbel, at the center of which stands the Anagni coat of arms with the eagle grasping the lion, the papal keys, and the imperial mantle.
