Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Jerusalem Artists' Colony a charming and unique spot, praising the opportunity to see local artists at work and purchase original art. The historic architecture and pleasant atmosphere are frequently highlighted. Some visitors note that not all galleries are open simultaneously, suggesting a need for strategic timing.

"My husband and I were traveling with a large group, and had passed by the Artists Colony several times during our tour of Jerusalem. When we had free time, we decided to check out the area. When we were there most of the galleries were closed, but we met photographer, Yaal Herman, and artist, Itzhak Luvaton. They could not have been more congenial. Their galleries were full of wonderful photos, art and jewelry, and we were thankful for both gentlemen's insights into their work and the beauty around Jerusalem. I wish we could have visited on a day all galleries were open, but we enjoyed spending time getting to know Yaal and Itzhak."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Hutzot Hayotzer

The Jerusalem Artists' Colony, known locally as Hutzot Hayotzer (meaning 'Courtyards of the Creators'), has a unique and poignant history. The area was once a no-man's-land situated between the Jordanian-controlled Old City and the Israeli-controlled West Jerusalem before the Six-Day War in 1967. After the reunification of Jerusalem, the area was redeveloped. The old storehouses and structures were transformed into studios and workshops for artists, creating a vibrant hub of creativity right on the edge of the historic Old City. This transformation from a tense border zone to a thriving artistic community is a testament to Jerusalem's resilience and spirit. Reddit

Today, the colony is a testament to the city's artistic soul. It houses a diverse range of artists, including painters, photographers, jewelers, and ceramicists. Visitors can wander through the charming courtyards, admire the unique architecture, and often witness artists at work in their studios. The blend of history and contemporary art makes it a compelling destination for those seeking an authentic Jerusalem experience beyond the main tourist sites. Reddit

Discovering Unique Art and Crafts

The primary draw of the Jerusalem Artists' Colony is its collection of original art and handcrafted items. Unlike mass-produced souvenirs, the pieces found here are created by local artisans, offering a genuine connection to the city's creative scene. You can find everything from vibrant paintings depicting Jerusalem landscapes and scenes to intricate jewelry made with local stones and metals. Photographers will appreciate the stunning photographic prints capturing the essence of Israel and its people. Reddit

Beyond visual arts, the colony also features ceramics, sculptures, and unique Judaica. Whether you're looking for a menorah, a Kiddush cup, or decorative items, you'll find beautifully crafted pieces that reflect Jewish tradition with a contemporary artistic flair. Many artists are happy to discuss their inspiration and techniques, making your purchase a more meaningful experience. It's an ideal place to find a special gift or a personal memento of your visit to Jerusalem. Reddit

The Influence of Armenian Culture

While not exclusively an Armenian cultural center, the Jerusalem Artists' Colony has seen influences from various communities, including Armenian heritage. Notably, the Arba Lijoch, a group of Armenian orphans who survived the genocide, were brought to Jerusalem in the 1920s. They formed a talented brass band that impressed Ethiopian Regent Ras Tafari Makonnen (later Emperor Haile Selassie). This encounter is a fascinating footnote in the cultural tapestry of Jerusalem, highlighting the city's role as a crossroads for diverse peoples and artistic expressions. TikTok

This historical context adds another layer to the rich cultural mosaic of Jerusalem. The Artists' Colony, in its modern form, continues this tradition of diverse artistic expression, drawing inspiration from the city's multifaceted history and its inhabitants. It serves as a space where different cultural threads can intertwine and be expressed through art, making it a truly unique destination. TikTok
