A 4-year-old boy accidentally smashed a Bronze Age jar during a visit to a museum in Israel on Friday, the museum said. The ancient jar, which was on display at the University of Haifa's Hecht Museum, dates back to between 2200 and 1500 B.C., making it at least 3,500 years old. It was especially rare due to it being fully intact — until Friday. The boy's father told media the jar fell to the groun...

An ancient artifact that has stood the test of time for thousands of years is now in pieces after a 4-year-old boy “pulled” on a jar “slightly” at Israel’s Hecht Museum — because he was curious what was inside.

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Hecht Museum for its impressive collection of archaeological finds and its free admission, making it a highly recommended and accessible cultural experience. While small, the exhibits are well-presented and engaging for all ages. Some visitors note that a guide can enhance the experience, and the museum's location within the university offers opportunities to combine visits with other attractions.

"Nice museum. Small but lots of interesting exhibits.its inside haifa university so there's other places to visit and it's close to the cable car. Also worth going on"

Denis Mcnulty

"A small and well done museum. It’s interesting to walk through and doesn’t take too long to see. I recommend it. At the time I visited, admission was free. I visited on a local Jewish holiday, so I don’t know if that impacted admission fees. It’s located on floor one. A lot is closed here at the university today, so it took me some time to find the entrance. If you can’t enter on floor one (where the outdoor signs seem to be leading visitors), you can enter at the main entrance to Eshkol tower (floor 4) and take the elevator to floor 1. The main entrance to Eshkol tower is on the same level as the parking. Once on floor one, you have to follow the hallway to the entrance. The main entrance seemed to be closed for renovations (I’m guessing) so follow the signs to the secondary exit."

Rachel Cousin

"Archaeological museum inside!university of Haifa. The entry is for free and needs to put your backpacks at the entrance. The overall exhibition space is not big. The visiting experience will be ideal if there is a guide explaining to you while going over all the items here. There’s an ancient ship in the exhibition hall, special and gigantic!"

The Accidental Artifact Incident

In June 2022, the Hecht Museum gained international attention due to an incident involving a 4-year-old boy and a Bronze Age jar. The ancient artifact, estimated to be between 3,500 and 4,000 years old, was accidentally broken during the child's visit. The jar was noted for being particularly rare due to its fully intact condition prior to the incident. TikTokInstagram+1

According to reports, the boy was curious about what was inside the jar and 'pulled' on it slightly, causing it to fall. The museum's response was notably gracious; the child's father explained the situation, and the museum later invited the boy back to witness the restoration process. This act of understanding and education highlighted the museum's commitment to fostering a positive learning environment, even in the face of accidental damage. Instagram

This event, while unfortunate for the artifact, brought a unique story to the museum's narrative. It also underscored the delicate nature of ancient artifacts and the importance of museum supervision, while simultaneously showcasing the museum's approach to handling such situations with empathy and educational focus.
