What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Haifa Educational Zoo offers a unique experience due to its location on a steep mountainside, which can be both adventurous and challenging. While some visitors appreciate the variety of animals and additional attractions like the botanical garden, many report issues with closed enclosures, limited animal visibility, and significant accessibility problems due to the terrain. The zoo is generally considered reasonably priced, especially if discounts are found, but the overall experience can be impacted by the physical demands and the state of some exhibits.
"I honestly don’t know how this place is allowed to operate in its current state. The Haifa Zoo is a complete nightmare, especially if you’re coming with children or god forbid a stroller. Be warned: this zoo is built on a series of steep, winding, and frankly dangerous hills. It feels more like a hike through a poorly maintained mountainside than a family-friendly animal park. There are no proper ramps, barely any handrails in key spots, and the paths are so steep and uneven I was genuinely worried for our safety multiple times.
Stroller-friendly? Absolutely not. You’ll either be holding on for dear life trying to stop it from rolling down the hill or dragging it backwards up narrow, slippery paths. It’s exhausting, unsafe, and completely inconsiderate to families with small children or anyone with mobility issues. It’s as if accessibility was never even a thought when they planned this place.
And as for the animals… what animals? There were barely any. Maybe 10-15 enclosures actually had anything in them, and the ones that did had animals that looked either stressed, lethargic, or hiding in the farthest corner where you couldn’t even see them. Half the cages looked abandoned or under construction. It felt more like a ghost town with a few sad animals scattered around than a functioning zoo.
To top it off, signage is poor, there’s little shade, and the whole place feels dated and neglected. Definitely not worth the price of admission. We left frustrated, sweaty, and incredibly disappointed. Save your money and your energy — Haifa Zoo is one steep disaster."

"This zoo is on the mountain side, there are some quite serious hills to climb at times. So be prepared for that.
I suggest buying tickets through some coupon site like groo (groupon).
I like this zoo because I've known it since my childhood. There are many animals. The variety of animals is changing from time to time. There is a nice place with snacks and ice creams to take a break. There is a small museum of prehistoric man. I give it a 4 because the cages of the animals are often small. And some of them are alone without partners. Also last time I went (january 2023) there were some places under construction."

"Positive: discounts for olive hadashim, amazing flamingo cage, nice big cats (tiger and leopard), interesting reptiles area.
Negative: A lot of closed locations without animals, rats it the parrots cage."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Manage expectations regarding the number of visible animals, as some enclosures may be closed. The zoo does have a snack area with ice cream, which is usually a hit with kids. It can be a good local option if you don't want to travel far, but be prepared for the physical demands of the visit.

Navigating the Terrain
Visitors strongly advise wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes to navigate the uneven and often slippery paths. Planning your route to tackle inclines strategically can help manage the exertion. While some find the unique layout adventurous, others find it exhausting and a significant detractor from the overall experience. It's crucial to be prepared for a physical challenge and to adjust expectations regarding ease of movement within the zoo.
For those with strollers, be aware that many find them impractical or even dangerous to use here. Carrying younger children or using a baby carrier might be a more viable option. The steepness also means that what appears to be a short distance on a map can feel much longer and more demanding in reality.
Animal Welfare and Enclosure Conditions
Some visitors have observed animals appearing stressed, lethargic, or hiding away, making them difficult to see. There are also comments about cages being small for some animals, and some being housed alone without partners. While the zoo does have some notable exhibits like the flamingo cage and big cats, the overall impression for some is that the living quality and the scenery within the enclosures could be improved.
Despite these criticisms, other visitors recall the zoo fondly from childhood and note that the variety of animals does change. The zoo does offer information about the animals, which is appreciated. However, the recurring theme of closed or under-maintained enclosures suggests that potential visitors should manage their expectations regarding the number and visibility of animals.
Beyond the Animals: Other Attractions
Additionally, the zoo houses a small museum of prehistoric man. This can be an interesting educational stop, particularly for those interested in history and anthropology. It provides a different kind of learning experience that complements the zoological aspect of the visit.
For families, there's also a park and playground for children located near the zoo entrance. This offers a space for kids to play and burn off energy before or after exploring the zoo, making it a more comprehensive outing for families.
