Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the immaculate beauty and tranquility of the Bahá'í Terraces, highlighting the stunning gardens and panoramic views of Haifa. While the spiritual significance and architectural design are widely appreciated, some guests note restrictions on access to certain areas for non-Baha'is and occasional strictness regarding the dress code. Reddit

"Fantastic spot. Impeccably maintained garden. Shame that the non Bahai people are not allowed past the first level, but even from there the view of the sea and Haifa city is spectacular. One of the more beautiful areas I've visited."

"Prepare yourself for misogyny and misinformation- while the website says 6cm above the knee, they won’t admit you if your dress is AT your knee and will speak to your husband and not you. Unlike the kotel, they don’t have a plan b for tourists who properly read their dress code prior to arrival. We went back to our hotel to change and saw a woman with bare shoulders down to her breasts with thighs barely covered. Maybe if you’re Jewish you have to cover more than requested on the website? Or Dan F just doesn’t like my knees. In addition they will be cleaning for the next month so there was a small section available to see. Takes about 3 minutes to see. There is a bathroom though if you’re needing. Otherwise it’s a complete waste of time. Edit: it’s Just Dan F. No other male guard is threatened by knees."

Hannah Stampleman

"Beautiful gardens, you can park mostly around here, for free if you can find a space. If you head to the top there is a small area you can go in to view the gardens and there is parking 3 mins to its left. But if you want a free tour, go to their website and reserve a spot at least 1 day in advance. This reservation entrance is 2 mins left of the top. You can park in the middle too, lots of space there, or free admission at the shrine - where you can park to its right, if you can find a space the - which isn't easy"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Spiritual Significance of the Bahá'í Faith

The Bahá'í Faith, founded by Baháʼu'lláh in the 19th century, is a relatively young religion that emphasizes the spiritual unity of all humankind. Its core tenets include the oneness of God, the oneness of religions, and the oneness of humanity. Baháʼís believe that God has sent divine messengers throughout history, such as Abraham, Moses, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad, and that Baháʼu'lláh is the most recent of these messengers, fulfilling the prophecies of past religions. TikTok

The Bahá'í World Centre, located in Haifa and the surrounding area, serves as the spiritual and administrative heart of the faith. The Terraces and the Shrine of the Báb are central to this pilgrimage. The faith promotes principles like gender equality, universal education, and the elimination of prejudice, aiming to foster a peaceful and just global society. TikTok+1

Visitors, regardless of their faith, are welcomed to experience the serene atmosphere and learn about the Bahá'í teachings. The open nature of the faith encourages dialogue and understanding, making the Terraces a place for reflection and spiritual connection for all. Instagram

Architectural Brilliance and Design

The Bahá'í Terraces are a masterpiece of landscape architecture and design, meticulously crafted to complement the Shrine of the Báb. The 19 intricate terraces cascade down the northern slope of Mount Carmel, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. Each terrace is adorned with a unique variety of flowers, trees, and water features, all arranged in harmonious patterns. Instagram

The design philosophy behind the terraces emphasizes balance, symmetry, and the integration of nature with spiritual symbolism. The use of local materials and the careful consideration of the natural landscape contribute to the site's profound sense of peace and beauty. The Shrine of the Báb itself, with its iconic golden dome, is a focal point, visible from many vantage points along the terraces. Instagram

Architects like Siamak Hariri, who designed the Shrine of the Báb, have aimed to create structures that are both aesthetically stunning and spiritually uplifting. The organic forms and the interplay of light and shadow within the architecture are intended to inspire awe and contemplation, reflecting the Bahá'í principles of unity and divine beauty. Instagram

Navigating Visitor Experience and Etiquette

Visiting the Bahá'í Terraces requires an understanding of local customs and the site's specific etiquette. As a place of worship and pilgrimage, maintaining a respectful demeanor is paramount. This includes speaking softly, refraining from disruptive behavior, and dressing modestly. TikTokReddit

The dress code, requiring clothing to cover knees and shoulders, is strictly enforced to ensure respect for the sacred nature of the site. Visitors have noted that enforcement can sometimes be perceived as inconsistent, so it's best to err on the side of conservative attire. Chewing gum is also prohibited. Reddit

For those seeking a deeper understanding, booking a free guided tour is highly recommended. These tours, led by knowledgeable guides, provide insights into the history, architecture, and spiritual significance of the site, enriching the visitor's experience. Advance booking is essential. Reddit
