What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Monastery of Saint John in the Wilderness for its stunning natural beauty and serene atmosphere, with the modern church built on ancient Crusader foundations adding historical depth. However, many note significant challenges with access, including strict and unpredictable opening hours, a 'men only' policy for the interior, and reports of unwelcoming interactions from the resident monks.
"I haven't been to the place itself, only to the 'wilderness' in the surrounds. And I must say, this wilderness is particularly beautiful!"
Der Vorleser
"A gorgeous church located south of Ein Karem, in moshav even Sapira.
The original was a crusader church, its remains can still be seen. The modern church is mesmerizing specially with the view in front."
Joseph Asfour. Israeli Tour Guide
"The place itself is beautiful, lush and tranquil.
It is really not that easy to get there and find the right turn in those twisted streets. But that may be the main reason why it is such a calm and not touristy place. I came there as a hiker (hike from Jerusalem) and was quite exhausted, when I finally found that place.
I was there in middle of the Corona-pandemic and was the only visitor.
Could have been a wonderful experience, but there were quite some drawbacks:
1. the doors are shut. I called the number at the door (take your phone with you and never come other than during the set opening hours!!!) and had to wait in front of the door for nearly half an hour before a Sister came and let me in.
2. As I was the only guest and it was well before closing time, I thought, I could stroll around for some time and enjoy the place and have a little prayer or two.
But no: 20 min after I entered, the same sister came and showed me the way to the exit. ("You finished!")
3. As I was really exhausted, I sat down in front of the door and just wanted to have another 10 minutes of rest.
But no: the sister came out and was not pleased and said "walk away!"
So in the end... really nice place but I will stay away from it and the "hospitality" there. They seem to be quite happy without guests."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If your family enjoys hiking and exploring natural landscapes, the surrounding hills and canyons offer a beautiful environment. However, for a family outing focused on visiting a historical or religious site, this monastery might not be the most suitable choice due to access restrictions and the potential for a very brief or unwelcoming experience.
🚶 Solo Travelers & Hikers

A History Carved in Stone
The modern structure, built upon these ancient foundations, is a testament to enduring faith. It's nestled into the hillside, providing a sense of seclusion and peace. The surrounding landscape, often referred to as a 'wilderness,' is characterized by deep green canyons and rolling hills, creating a serene backdrop for contemplation and prayer. The presence of ten crosses atop the hillsides further enhances the spiritual ambiance of the area.
Navigating Access and Hospitality
One visitor shared an experience where, despite arriving within stated hours, they had to wait for a sister to open the doors and were then given a very limited time inside before being asked to leave. This suggests that while the location is beautiful and tranquil, the hospitality might not always align with typical tourist expectations. It's advisable to manage expectations and be prepared for a potentially brief or restricted visit, prioritizing the serene atmosphere and historical significance over extensive exploration.
