Tarbert Lighthouse is located on the south bank of the Shannon Estuary in County Kerry, Ireland. It was built in 1830 and opened for business on 31 March 1834. The lighthouse serves as a landmark for ships passing through the Shannon Estuary and is a white stone tower 22 metres high with a black lantern and a white dome.  
The lighthouse was originally isolated from the shore during high tides, but in 1841 a metal footbridge was built to provide permanent access. In 1905, the lighthouse changed from a steady light to a flashing light: 2 seconds of light, 2 seconds of darkness. In 1919, an automatic lighting system using acetylene gas was introduced, which made the lighthouse automated. 
The lighthouse was built in response to the increase in trade in the Port of Limerick and the need to ensure the safety of shipping in the area. It remains an important element of maritime navigation and a historical landmark for the region.

The lighthouse looked a bit forlorn on the gray day we made the short passage, so it is pleasant to see all the photos here of it on other, more sunny, cheerful days.
