Stumbled across this fascinating little church and cemetery, which is on the ruins of Old St Swithin's Church in Thorley. The original church was 13th century but the plaque says that the remaining building was built in 1871 as a mortuary chapel. You can find it off Thorley Road (B3401). No parking and no pavement so best on a bicycle! See our guide to days out for adults in stories for more in...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Old Church Cemetery a worthwhile stop for its historical significance, particularly the Lusitania graves and notable interments. However, many note that the cemetery can be difficult to find and the condition of the headstones, often illegible due to age and elements, detracts from the experience. The uneven ground also requires careful navigation.

"A wonderful cemetery with many war graves as well as others. If you don't know where it is you'll struggle to find it but, it's just past the Aldi and Lidl superstores on the road out of Cobh. Its worth spending an hour or so wandering about."

Rob Hillman

"An interesting local cemetery well worth a visit if you are in the area. The Lusitania graves are of interest as is the grave of the physician who was with Napolean in exile. Due to mold and fungi many of the headstones are hard to read and some are quite literally impossible to read. As well: the ground throughout the old cemetery is quite uneven so be very careful where you step."

Dale Urban

"Came here with my friend as her family is from lovely Cobh and had a precious time. My highlight of Cork, a lovely little coastal town with classic irish charm."
