What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate Monkstown Castle's historical significance and unique architecture, particularly its exterior features. However, many are disappointed by the lack of public access, as it's privately owned and not open for tours, with some noting its current status as a property for sale.
"basically there is nothing to see, the castle is fenced and for sale, only the entrance gate attracts attention"
Krzysztof Roszkowski
"Beautiful castle would love to see it fully restored"
Dave Pinfield
"Fascinating building constructed in 1636, a genuine old castle in very good condition. Locked up, no public access, but you can walk around the outside. No grounds - they've been built on. Someone got permission to convert into luxury apartments, fitted double glazed windows and a good roof, cleared inside and then abandoned the project. In 2020 and in early 2021 it is offered for sale as is for €800,000."

A Castle's Journey: From Gift to Residence
The castle later served a very different purpose: from 1908 to 1971, it was the clubhouse for Monkstown Golf Club. More recently, it has undergone partial restoration to become private residential accommodation. While this means it's not accessible for public tours, its continued existence and partial renovation highlight its enduring architectural and historical significance.
Despite its private status, the castle remains a point of interest for its distinctive Irish battlements and sentry box, visible from the exterior. Its story is a testament to private ownership and the preservation of historical buildings, even if access is limited.
Understanding Monkstown Castle's Current Status
In recent years, the castle has been listed for sale, sometimes with a price tag around €800,000. This status as a property for sale means that its future is still being determined, and it remains inaccessible to the general public. Travelers often express a desire for it to be fully restored and made more accessible to the public, but for now, it remains a private dwelling.
When visiting, be mindful of its private nature. The surrounding grounds have also been developed, so the castle stands as a distinct historical structure within a more modern setting. Appreciating its architecture from the outside is the primary way to experience Monkstown Castle.
