What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

The Kilkenny Design Centre is praised for its wide selection of Irish crafts and its picturesque location in the historic castle yard, making it a popular spot for souvenirs. However, some visitors have noted that it can feel geared towards tourists and have raised concerns about the cleanliness and quality of the on-site cafe.

"Esch time I visit Kilkenny, I make sure to stop in here and see what kind of things they have. There is a great variety of gifts for yourself and your family to be purchased here. A great place to shop with a little cafe just down the way a bit. I’ve picked up a nice souvenir ring with The 12 Symbols of The History of Ireland. There are other items as well such as candles, skincare, other jewelry pieces, and more."

"The Kilkenny Design Centre does gather a number of artisan goods into one store, but it seems to be pitched towards the tourist market. There are nice products, but they do not highlight the small Irish artisans and focuses mainly on some larger makers. Would try some of the independent shops especially on the back of The Castle Yard."

"Hello,
I brought my two children here to the downstairs cafe a few days ago at lunchtime. I have to say I was very disappointed with the standard. I am not sure if it is a look but the cutlery in the baskets was grubby and the plates and cups all had a brown layer on them.
We left half the egg sandwich as it was very tasteless with the bread stale on the edges.

Visiting the upstairs gents toilets I was very surprised to find how dirty they were both the floor and surfaces. The cubicle even had graffiti inside dated 2023! I can supply the photo.

I know they can do better as I have been before. Perhaps even a few wall hangings downstairs to take away the roadside cafe feel of reverberating sound from the closed in space?

Maybe this is why I was asked by a resident of Kilkenny we were staying with why on earth we went there its only for tourists and not very good."

The Heart of Irish Craftsmanship

The Kilkenny Design Centre is more than just a shop; it's a celebration of Irish design and traditional crafts. Housed in the historic Castle Yard, it serves as a platform for numerous local artisans to showcase their work. From intricate jewelry and ceramics to textiles and homeware, the centre offers a diverse range of products that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Ireland. Many of the featured items are handcrafted, ensuring a unique and personal touch that sets them apart from mass-produced souvenirs. TikTokInstagram

While the centre is a fantastic place to find gifts and mementos, some visitors note that it can lean towards a more tourist-oriented market, focusing on larger makers. For those seeking the truly unique and perhaps more niche creations, exploring the artisan studios dotted around the courtyard is highly recommended. These smaller workshops offer a more intimate glimpse into the creative process and a chance to connect directly with the craftspeople. TikTokReddit

Beyond the shopping experience, the Kilkenny Design Centre is also a place to discover other local offerings. The Kilkenny Cafe provides an opportunity to sample local produce and enjoy a coffee, though it's worth noting that reviews on cleanliness and food quality are mixed. The surrounding grounds also offer a pleasant environment for a stroll, adding another layer to the visitor experience. InstagramReddit

Navigating the Kilkenny Cafe Experience

The Kilkenny Cafe, located within the Design Centre, aims to provide a taste of local Kilkenny produce in a welcoming setting. It's a popular spot for visitors looking for a light meal, coffee, or baked goods after exploring the shops or the nearby castle. The cafe emphasizes using locally sourced ingredients, aligning with the overall ethos of supporting Irish producers. Instagram+1

However, it's important to be aware of the mixed reviews regarding the cafe's standards. Some patrons have expressed disappointment with the cleanliness of the facilities, citing issues with cutlery, plates, and the general state of the restrooms. There have also been comments about the food quality, with specific mentions of tasteless sandwiches and stale bread. Reddit

Given these varied experiences, it's advisable to approach the cafe with realistic expectations. While it offers a convenient location and a focus on local ingredients, it might be prudent to inspect your table and utensils upon arrival. For those prioritizing a pristine dining experience, exploring other highly-rated cafes and restaurants in Kilkenny city might be a better option. Reddit
