Timing is Everything

Visit on a clear day for the best views of the Skellig Islands and the Wild Atlantic Way. Check the weather forecast before you go, as fog can obscure the stunning scenery. Early mornings or late afternoons offer softer light for photos and fewer crowds.

Prepare for the Trail

Wear sturdy walking shoes as the terrain can be uneven and grassy, especially closer to the cliffs. The 5.4km loop trail is well-marked but can be steep in parts. Bring water and snacks, as facilities are limited.

BRAY HEAD, Valentia Island Kerry. What a spot, one of the best Cliff walks in Ireland & incredible views onto the Skellig Islands. It’s a 5.4km loop, it’s well marked out on a hard terrain before turning grassy and it includes a section along the steep cliffs. Great car park (pay & display to use it) called “Bray Head Car Park on Google maps) & I would highly recommend while your out this directio...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Bray Head for its magnificent, unparalleled views of the Skellig Islands and the Wild Atlantic Way. The walk is described as a rewarding experience, with the historical signal tower adding an extra layer of interest. While the parking fee is minimal, some mention ongoing renovations to the tower.

"€2 per car to park and well worth it. The signal tower at the end of the trail was being rehabbed during our visit (seemed to be going on through the summer / fall of 2025) so you may not be able to enter until it that work is completed.

The trail is a great hike with wonderful views of the Portmagee, Kerry Cliffs, the Skellig islands, and a glimpse of the Blaskett islands off to the north.

Of course there are plenty of sheep and lamb about, content to keep munching away as you walk past.

The site for the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable is also nearby and worth a look."

Eric Zumwalt

"This place is magnificent! I truly believe that the view from here is among the best on Earth. The air is fresh and clean, right off of the ocean.

Along the cliffs to the north, you might see sheep perched right at the edge! The depth of field is outstanding for photography.

The car park is down the hill, to the east, and it is about 25-35 minute walk through a cow pasture. There is a rock wall climb that you must do about a 1/3 of the way up the hill.

Take the time to go to this out of the way place on your Ring of Kerry drive, it will not disappoint"

Andre Slintak

"Nice 2 hour round trip hike and well worth the walk. Open scenic views in all directions. Photos do not do it justice. Make this part of your off-track Ring of Kerry tour."
