Despite first impressions, this beautifully restored tower was not military in purpose but dedicated to something altogether more prosaic: it is a pigeon house, a giant roost for the collection of guano. Used for fertiliser, the guano was a precious commodity before the introduction of chemical equivalents, so the more pigeons that could be induced to take up residence the better. This particular ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Meybod Pigeon Tower a unique and architecturally fascinating site, appreciating its historical agricultural purpose and the intricate design of its pigeon holes. While some note it lacks the grandeur of other Iranian towers, its cool atmosphere and well-preserved state are highlighted as positives. The entrance fee for foreigners is a common point of mention.

"This pigeon tower is one of the most beautiful pigeon towers that I have seen in Iran. The indirect sunlight that falls into the pigeon tower creates a subtle and beautiful play of light and shadows around the pigeon holes.

Pigeon towers were built to collect the excrements of the pigeons so that they could be used as fertilizer in the fields. It is also said that the pigeons would protect citizens from an approaching army by flying out of the tower when they hear the noise of hooves made on and transmitted by the ground."

Paul Meylemans

"I like dovecote towers and it was a clean one cause the put glasses on windows so they couldn't make a home in there ☹️
And it also didn't have that special architecture like Isfahan Mardavij tower.
Anyways it's good to have them protected and I enjoyed its cool atmosphere."

Ali Soltani

"this dovecote tower belongs to Qajar time ( 1800s AD) & located just near the Narin Castle ( around 800 meter ) . Dovecote towers where used throughout Iran to collect the pigeon & dove’s dung ( manure ) which is a very useful fertilizer . Meybod Dovecot tower is a two story building which can house 4000 pigeons . there is a plastered ring around the tower in white color to prevent repltiles like snakes to get in & disturb the birds inside . some big bowls are installed on the roof to water the birds in the hot seasons . interior architecture is also a masterpiece as it is built in a way to prevent the whole structure from destruction caused by birds vibration while they flutter ."

The Ingenious Design of Dovecotes

Meybod's Pigeon Tower, like others across Iran, is a marvel of ancient engineering designed for a specific agricultural purpose: collecting pigeon guano. This 'white gold' was a highly prized fertilizer, essential for the region's farming. The towers were strategically built with thousands of small, precisely placed holes, creating a welcoming habitat for pigeons while facilitating the collection of their droppings. The cylindrical shape was not just aesthetic; it helped to prevent structural damage from the collective vibrations of thousands of birds taking flight simultaneously. InstagramReddit

Beyond housing the birds, the design incorporated clever defenses. A plastered ring around the exterior, often white, served to deter climbing predators like snakes. The entrance was also scientifically designed to prevent animals such as eagles, hawks, and owls from entering and disturbing the nesting pigeons. This meticulous planning ensured the safety of the birds and the efficient collection of their valuable waste. Reddit

These structures represent a fascinating intersection of architecture, agriculture, and animal husbandry. They highlight the resourcefulness of past civilizations in maximizing their environment and resources.
