Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Ubud Art Market a vibrant and colorful place to explore a wide array of Balinese handicrafts and souvenirs. While haggling is a must and prices can be higher than elsewhere, many enjoy the lively atmosphere and the opportunity to find unique items. Visiting in cooler hours is recommended to enhance the experience.

"Most of the prices are 3x the selling price we see at stores in Sanur Harbor. Even if you haggle, you will just be able to haggle it to the original selling price. So don’t buy unless you don’t have time to look elsewhere or want a challenge to haggle until you deem the price is worth the item. We were able to buy some items that I didn’t see in other places like the patched up pants."

Corinne

"Yes, it is geared for tourists and yes, you must haggle but some people like that. We arrived at 11:15 and it was starting to get busy. When we left and hour later it was hopping with people. We started in the building and then to the street market next door. Same stuff, smaller aisles. Ask how much, they name a price, you counter with half, and then the bargaining starts. It's fun and the shop keepers were not pushy at all. Hubby got a t-shirt for 130k and was happy. Warning! Lots of wooden penis on sale. Prep your kids!
Across the street from the old Royal Palace."

Robin Mayer

"Ubud Art Market is a great place to explore, with a wide variety of local crafts, souvenirs, clothes, and handmade items. It's a fun spot to wander around and pick up something unique to take home.

One tip—try to visit in the late afternoon or evening, as it can get extremely hot around noon. The cooler hours make the experience much more enjoyable. Overall, a vibrant and colorful market worth checking out while in Ubud!"

While prices can be higher than in some other Balinese markets, the central location and variety make it a convenient option. Reddit+1

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Bargaining

Haggling is an integral part of the shopping experience at the Ubud Art Market. Sellers typically start with a price that's 2-2.5 times higher than the actual selling price. Your strategy should be to counter with roughly half of their initial offer. Don't be afraid to walk away if you don't feel the price is right; sometimes this can lead to a better offer. Remember, the goal is a mutually agreeable price, and the process should be enjoyable rather than confrontational. Reddit+1

It's important to note that while bargaining is expected, some vendors might be less flexible, especially for unique or higher-priced items. Be polite and friendly throughout the negotiation. Many visitors find this interaction to be a fun cultural exchange. Reddit

Pro Tip: Have small denominations of Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) handy to make the transaction smoother once you've agreed on a price. This also helps avoid issues if a vendor claims they don't have change for larger bills after bargaining. Reddit

Navigating the Market's Layout

The Ubud Art Market, also known as Pasar Seni Ubud, is a dynamic space that spans both an indoor building and numerous outdoor stalls lining the surrounding streets. The indoor section offers a more organized display of goods, while the outdoor kiosks provide a more intimate, street-level shopping experience. Reddit

Don't limit yourself to just the main building. Wander through the adjacent lanes and smaller alleys, as you might discover hidden gems or find better deals. The variety of items can differ between the indoor and outdoor sections, so exploring both is highly recommended for a comprehensive shopping trip. Reddit

Many visitors find that the 'same stuff' can be found in both areas, but the layout of the kiosks can feel more cramped and bustling. Be prepared for narrower aisles and a more intense atmosphere as you navigate these areas. Reddit

What to Buy: Beyond the Usual

While the Ubud Art Market is famous for its souvenirs like sarongs, rattan bags, and wooden carvings, there's a wealth of other items to discover. Look out for unique clothing, such as jumpsuits and painted Balinese dresses, which are often highlighted as great finds. Home decor items, including intricate wall hangings and decorative pieces, also make for excellent purchases. Instagram

For those interested in more specific crafts, keep an eye out for handmade jewelry, intricately woven textiles, and artistic paintings. The market is a treasure trove for those willing to browse and explore beyond the most obvious displays. TikTokInstagram

A word of caution: Be aware that some items, like wooden penis carvings, are prevalent and might surprise unprepared visitors. It's always good to be aware of what's on offer. Reddit
