Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Pondok Pekak Library & Learning Centre for its unique blend of a peaceful library and engaging Balinese art classes. The patient and skilled instructors, particularly Nyoman, are frequently praised for making cultural experiences accessible and enjoyable for all ages. While the library offers a serene escape, the hands-on workshops are the highlight for many, providing authentic cultural immersion.

"My family did a a woodcarving class and Nyoman was our instructor. He was incredibly patient with the kids and adults! So fun! I felt it taught the children patience, control, as well as skill. We arrived earlier than anticipated because there was no traffic in ubud (gasp!) and Nyoman was kind to come in early as well. There were no link online and I wasn’t sure how to book so I messaged them on whatsapp and was told I could book whichever type of class I wanted and whatever time I wanted as long as I gave 2 hour notice. My youngest is 4 and the recommended age for carving is 6+. Nyoman allowed my 4 year old to do the class and I “helped”. One of the best activities we’ve done so far. Will try a painting class or silver making class next time."

"I read in a Lonely Planet travel guide that Pondok Pekak Library offered Gamelan (traditional Balinese music) classes. The book was published over ten years ago. Many of the restaurants and accommodations it recommended are now gone—but this place is still here, going strong! It’s clear that it has been run with heart and dedication. The staff are kind and welcoming, and the whole atmosphere feels warm and comforting.

I took a Gangsa (Balinese metallophone) class with Nyoman, who is an incredibly passionate and patient teacher. He has a wealth of teaching experience and makes the class fun and relaxed. He would first play a part for me, then let me follow along. Even if I forgot a beat, I could just play along with him—no pressure at all, perfect for beginners!

The Gangsa produces a powerful, resonant sound—it’s no wonder it was originally used to send messages to the gods. It’s a wonderful experience for both adults and children. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to dive deeper into Balinese culture.

When you're in Bali, don’t just watch a performance—come and experience the magic of traditional music for yourself. Next time I visit, I definitely want to try learning the Bamboo Rindik!"
