What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Raung is lauded as one of Java's most challenging and rewarding hikes, offering extreme technical trails and breathtaking views of its massive active crater. While not for the faint of heart and requiring essential safety gear and guides, the sense of accomplishment and the unique volcanic landscapes make it a highly recommended adventure for thrill-seekers. Some visitors note the lack of amenities and the demanding nature as potential drawbacks.
"One of the most challenging trail in java, we choose the popular trail from Kalibaru with 3d2n camping. It is also the only route which has four peak on the way. The way to summit attack is so interesting and its really gets your adrenaline going. Everyone must put on safety helmet and harness in order to climb safely. The highest point of Mount Raung is Puncak Sejati 3344m and the view on top of the crater is so amazing, it is the second largest volcano crater in indonesia and largest in Java. Foreigner is not many during our visit, obviously it is not so famous compared to Bromo and Semeru. However it is worth visiting if you likes outdoor sport and adventure."

"One of the most amazing hikes I've encountered so far! It's a bit more technical than regular hikes, because you need to equip yourself with climbing gears. Not for those who's afraid of height! The view very well paid all the efforts and sweats. Definitely put on your bucketlist!"

"An interesting and fun mount to hike. Mt. Ruang is an active volcano mountain and infamous for its trek to the summit, a guide is a must. There is 9 post/camp along the track; and at least 4 peaks, Gunung Wetan, Bendera, 17, and Sejati (the highest). The view and scenery from the top are magnificent. Oh, you can also see Mt. Argopura and Mt. Semeru from afar.
Tips:
• There is no water source
• Get an ojeg to get you to Camp 1 (the Mr. Sunarya shelter). It kinda far from the base camp.
• If you are a rice person, then bring some cooked rice from the base camp. Worry not, it won't spoil for up to a week.
• Cook something that requires less (or none of) water."

Guides are knowledgeable about the safest routes and can assist with technical sections.
The journey often involves multiple peaks, with Puncak Sejati being the highest at 3344 meters. This extreme nature makes Mount Raung a destination for seasoned adventurers seeking an adrenaline rush and a true test of their mountaineering skills.
Understanding Mount Raung's Volcanic Nature
Despite the potential for eruptions, the volcano's activity also creates unique geological features. The most striking is its caldera, which is one of the largest in Indonesia and the largest in Java. This immense crater is a major draw for visitors, offering a spectacular view from the summit. The volcanic soil also contributes to the lush, albeit challenging, environment surrounding the mountain.
While the active nature of Mount Raung adds to its allure, it also necessitates caution. Visitors should always stay informed about the current volcanic status and heed any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities. This awareness ensures a safer and more responsible exploration of this powerful natural wonder.
Trekking Routes and Campsites
Along this challenging path, there are several campsites or posts that serve as resting points. One notable mention is the Mr. Sunarya shelter, often referred to as Camp 1.
