Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the awe-inspiring beauty of the blue fire and the dramatic crater lake views, calling it a 'best trek' and 'most rewarding thing.' However, many note the significant crowds, especially in the early morning, and the strenuous, muddy hike. Some reviews mention areas needing maintenance and a desire for better crowd management.

"Joined an open trip to here, the guide was so helpful and care. He always made sure that the team members were safe and had no problem. Many guides in Kawah Ijen can speak multi language from English, Spanish and even French! And the fruit sellers at the entrance gate can speak Mandarin! Overall trip to Ijen Crater was amazing but I think many spots have to be maintained and the trip organizer should brief us to bring the google too avoid the smoke from the sulphur."

Audrey Tanzil

"This is a good tour. It's a reasonably strenuous hike to the top of the volcano but is worth the effort. It was raining when we did the tour which makes it very muddy. Our guide was OK. Maybe rushing us along in the beginning. We were lucky enough to see the blue flame because the rain stopped while we were in the crater. If it's raining, there is no blue flame. Once the sun came up, you get to see were you are and it's beautiful with the blue lake with the fumes and mist moving across it. Only thing I would say is there needs to be a limit of numbers because there were literally thousands of people and in my opinion this makes it a bit dangerous."

Graeme Holroyd

"Amazing view, nice trek but very crowded early in the morning. The best advice I could give is when you go to the top, you should continue on the right, walk for a kilometer and you will have the best view on the crater and on the sulfur mine. Be careful do not buy sulfur, it’s highly toxic and explosive. The trek is short but pretty steep, take your time and enjoy the view !"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There

Most visitors travel from Bali to Java via ferry to Banyuwangi. From Banyuwangi or Bondowoso, you'll typically join an organized tour or hire a private car to reach the Ijen crater base camp. The journey can be long, often taking 24 hours round trip from Bali.Reddit

The most common way is to join an organized tour that departs late at night from your accommodation. These tours include transportation to the base camp and a guide to lead you up the mountain in the dark to catch the blue fire.

Public transport directly to the crater is limited. It's highly recommended to book an organized tour or arrange private transport for a smoother experience, especially for reaching the base camp before the hike.

The travel time varies greatly depending on your starting point. From Banyuwangi, it's about a 1.5-2 hour drive to the base camp. The hike itself can take 1.5-3 hours depending on your pace.TikTok

You can drive to the Paltuding base camp, which is the starting point for the hike. However, the roads can be challenging, and parking might be limited, especially during peak times. Organized tours often handle all transportation logistics.

🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry

Ticket prices can vary, but expect to pay an entrance fee. Many tours include the ticket price in their package, which can be around 200,000 IDR.TikTok

To see the blue fire, you need to arrive very early in the morning, typically between 1 AM and 3 AM. The crater is accessible for viewing the sunrise and lake later in the day as well.

While you can purchase tickets at the entrance, booking an organized tour in advance is highly recommended. This ensures you have transportation, a guide, and a confirmed spot, especially for the popular blue fire viewing.

Discounts are not commonly advertised for individual tickets. However, joining an open trip or a group tour can often be more cost-effective than arranging everything independently.

Most tours include transportation, a guide, a gas mask, a headlamp, and the entrance ticket. Some may also offer optional add-ons like photography services.TikTok

🎫 ⛰️ Onsite Experience

The hike is considered strenuous, with a steep incline and rugged terrain. It can take 1.5 to 3 hours to reach the viewpoint. Proper footwear and a good level of fitness are recommended.TikTokReddit

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, comfortable clothing in layers, and a jacket for the cold. A headlamp is essential for navigating in the dark.TikTok

While some families do bring children, it's not generally recommended for very young children due to the difficult terrain and dark conditions. A 10-year-old might manage with careful supervision and appropriate gear, but it's a challenging trek.Reddit

The sulfur fumes are strong and can be irritating to the eyes and lungs. Wearing a gas mask or respirator is highly advised to protect yourself.TikTok+1

While observing the miners is part of the experience, maintain a safe distance. The sulfur itself is toxic and explosive, so avoid touching it or getting too close to their work areas.Reddit

📸 📸 Photography Tips

The rim of the crater offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape. For the blue fire, you'll need to be at the right spot during its eruption. Some tours offer photography assistance.TikTok

Photographing the blue fire is challenging due to low light and moving flames. Use a tripod, a wide aperture, and a high ISO. Experiment with long exposure settings. Many visitors capture it on video.TikTok

For general crater views, use a wide-angle lens. For the blue fire, a fast lens (low f-number) and a tripod are crucial. Consider shooting in RAW for better post-processing, especially for the low-light conditions.

Drone usage might be restricted in national parks. Always check local regulations before flying. The dramatic landscape can be captured effectively with ground-level photography as well.TikTok

Keep your camera in a protective bag when not in use. Wipe down your gear thoroughly after your visit to remove any residual sulfur particles.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Visiting Kawah Ijen with children requires careful consideration. The hike is strenuous and challenging, with steep, uneven, and potentially slippery terrain, making it unsuitable for very young children.Reddit If you do decide to bring older children (e.g., 10+), ensure they are physically fit and have appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy boots and a gas mask.TikTok

Consider booking a tour that prioritizes safety and has experienced guides who can assist children. The early morning start and dark conditions can also be daunting for kids. While the blue fire is a unique sight, the overall experience might be more enjoyable for families with teenagers or young adults who can handle the physical demands and the unique environment.

🎒 Budget Travelers

For budget-conscious travelers, joining an open trip is the most economical way to experience Kawah Ijen. These group tours often bundle transportation, a guide, and entrance fees for a fixed price, which can be significantly cheaper than private arrangements.TikTok Look for tours departing from Banyuwangi or Bondowoso for potentially lower costs compared to those originating from Bali.

While some tours might seem basic, they provide the essential elements for a safe and successful visit. Pack your own snacks and water to save on costs at the crater. Be prepared for a long journey, as budget tours often involve more travel time. Research different tour operators and compare prices and inclusions before booking.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Mystical Blue Fire Phenomenon

The blue fire of Kawah Ijen is a rare and captivating natural phenomenon caused by the combustion of sulfuric gases. When these gases come into contact with oxygen at high temperatures, they ignite, producing an electric-blue flame. This spectacle is only visible in the dark and is one of the most sought-after sights at Ijen.TikTok+2

It's important to note that the blue fire is not constant; its intensity can vary. While it's a major draw, seeing it is not guaranteed, especially if the weather is unfavorable. Many visitors report that even if the blue fire is faint, the overall experience of hiking in the dark and witnessing the volcanic activity is incredibly rewarding.TikTokInstagram

To maximize your chances of seeing the blue fire, aim to be at the crater rim between 1 AM and 3 AM. Tours are specifically timed to get you there during this optimal window. Remember to be patient and enjoy the unique atmosphere, even if the flames are not as prominent as you imagined.TikTok

Navigating the Hike and Terrain

The trek to the Kawah Ijen crater rim is a significant undertaking. It's a strenuous hike covering approximately 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) one way, with an elevation gain of about 400 meters (1,300 feet). The path is steep and can be very muddy and slippery, especially after rain.Reddit Many visitors describe it as challenging but ultimately worth the effort.TikTokInstagram

Essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip, as worn-out shoes can be dangerous on the uneven terrain.TikTok Layers of clothing are recommended due to the significant temperature drop at night and higher altitudes. A headlamp is crucial for visibility during the pre-dawn hike.TikTok Some travelers recommend bringing trekking poles for added stability on the steep sections.

While the hike is demanding, many find it an empowering experience. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the crater rim, especially in the dark, is immense. Guides are invaluable for navigating the path safely and providing encouragement throughout the trek.TikTokInstagram

Understanding the Sulfur Miners

Kawah Ijen is not only a natural wonder but also a place of hard labor for local sulfur miners. These individuals brave the toxic fumes and challenging conditions daily to extract large chunks of sulfur, which they carry down the mountain in baskets. Their strength and resilience are truly remarkable.TikTok

Observing the miners is a poignant part of the Ijen experience. They often work in pairs, carrying loads that can weigh up to 80-100 kilograms (175-220 pounds). While it's fascinating to witness their work, it's crucial to maintain a respectful distance and avoid interfering with their tasks. Be aware that the sulfur itself is toxic and can be explosive.Reddit

Many visitors express admiration for the miners and their dedication. Some tours may offer opportunities to interact with them or purchase small sulfur crystals as souvenirs, though it's important to do so respectfully and ethically. The miners' livelihood is intrinsically linked to the volcanic activity of Ijen.
