Reviews Summary

Visitors find Fort de Kock to be a place with historical remnants and pleasant picnic grounds, though the adjacent zoo has drawn criticism for animal welfare. While the fort itself may require imagination to appreciate its past, the panoramic views and the sky walk offer enjoyable experiences. Reddit+1

"Heartbreaking from the beginning to the end… Don’t go there unless you want to witness how cruel human can be

I bought the ticket for fort Kock without knowing it gave access to the zoo, the fort wasn’t even worth it. I knew the zoo would be bad but I went there to witness it : the first thing you see are two elephants chained to the ground with just 1-2m of freedom, one of them wasn’t able to trim its tusks which were too long for him and where bothering him. Then you can see birds, reptiles, monkey, bears,… in very small and dirty (there were rats eating the animals food) enclosures made of concrete or iron fences.

On top of that, most local visitors are knocking on the enclosures to wake the animals and get a good picture. I couldn’t see any signs from the zoo to raise awareness about animal wellbeing."

"The visit was worth it. Some of the animals did not have a lot of room, which is always a bit sad to see. Also a great place for a picnic."

"Arrived Bukittinggi today and visited Fort De Kock.
Entrance fee 50k, for Bule tourist, which included Zoo entrance.
Disappointed with Fort.
Description said remnants of 19th century Dutch Fort.
A few old canons, a 1935 concrete Tower, which the staff said I could not go into, lots of Gazebos on a hill.
Imagination is the key here.
Photo is 1826 drawing of Fort.
Lucky the bridge across to the Zoo made the day more interesting.
I will review Zoo separately.
Fort grounds need maintenance."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Fort de Kock

Fort de Kock, originally built in the 19th century by the Dutch, served as a strategic military post during the Padri War (1821-1837). Its construction was part of the Dutch colonial effort to control the Minangkabau region and suppress local resistance. The fort's presence marked a significant period of Dutch influence in West Sumatra. Instagram+1

Over time, the settlement that grew around the fort evolved into the city of Bukittinggi. While the fort's original structure has largely diminished, remnants like cannons and a memorial tower stand as testaments to its past. The historical significance is often highlighted in local narratives and educational materials, drawing parallels to Indonesia's colonial history. TikTokInstagram+1

Today, Fort de Kock is a site of historical interest, offering visitors a chance to connect with the region's past. The juxtaposition of historical remnants with modern developments, like the sky walk, provides a unique perspective on Bukittinggi's evolution. Instagram

Navigating the Zoo Experience

The entrance fee to Fort de Kock often includes access to an adjacent zoo. While many visitors appreciate the green space for picnics and a leisurely stroll, the zoo's animal enclosures have been a point of concern for some. Reports mention animals in small, concrete enclosures, with some visitors expressing sadness over the conditions. Reddit+1

Specific observations include elephants chained with limited freedom and animals showing signs of distress. There's also a noted lack of educational signage regarding animal welfare. Local visitors have sometimes been observed interacting with animals in ways that may disturb them, such as knocking on enclosures. Reddit

Despite these concerns, the zoo's grounds can still be a pleasant area for families to spend time, especially for picnics. It's a place where visitors can observe a variety of animals, but it's important to be aware of the ethical considerations surrounding animal welfare in such environments. Reddit+1
