Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Candi Sumberawan for its unique Buddhist stupa architecture, serene natural setting, and peaceful atmosphere, offering a tranquil escape from busier tourist spots. Its affordability and historical significance are also highlighted as major draws for those seeking cultural immersion and quiet contemplation.

"Nestled in the tranquil village of Toyomarto, Singosari District, Malang Regency, Sumberawan Temple is a small yet historically and spiritually significant Buddhist stupa dating back to the 14th century Majapahit era. Unlike the grand temples of Borobudur or Prambanan, Sumberawan exudes a quiet, mystical charm, surrounded by lush greenery and a serene pond that enhances its meditative atmosphere. The temple is believed to have been a place of worship and meditation for Buddhist monks, and its simplicity reflects the harmony between nature and spirituality in Javanese tradition.

The temple itself is a single stupa structure, standing about 5 meters tall, constructed from andesite stone with a bell-shaped dome typical of Buddhist architecture. Unlike many other Javanese temples covered in intricate carvings, Sumberawan’s design is minimalist, yet its historical value is immense. Local legends suggest that King Hayam Wuruk of Majapahit once visited this site during his travels, further adding to its cultural significance. The surrounding area is peaceful, with a well-maintained garden and a reflective pond that mirrors the temple, creating a picturesque setting perfect for photography or quiet contemplation.

Visitors to Sumberawan Temple often appreciate its tranquil and uncrowded environment, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a break from tourist-heavy destinations. The pathway leading to the temple is lined with trees, and the sound of rustling leaves combined with occasional bird calls enhances the spiritual ambiance. Nearby, a natural spring (which gives the temple its name—Sumberawan meaning "holy spring") is considered sacred, and many locals still collect its water for rituals or blessings. The temple’s proximity to Singosari Temple (another historical gem from the same era) makes it a worthwhile addition to a cultural tour of Malang.

Accessibility is relatively easy, with a short walk from the parking area through a scenic village path. The entrance fee is minimal, and the site is well-kept, though facilities are basic—visitors should bring their own water and sun protection. While not as grandiose as other Indonesian temples, Sumberawan’s understated beauty, historical aura, and peaceful surroundings make it a hidden treasure for history enthusiasts, spiritual seekers, and nature lovers alike. Whether you're exploring East Java’s ancient heritage or simply looking for a quiet retreat, this temple offers a unique and reflective experience."

"Sumberawan Temple, a breezy and calm pine forest and park, suitable for camp, religious journey or just take a walk and picnic. Not too far from Singosari main road, and easy to find although the road is bit narrow. The ticket is only 5000 rupiah/person, you can bring your own food there. There are some food stalls, but mostly they sell instant cup noodle and snacks.
The place is clean, the small forest is easy to access for kids, but I think need an improvement, maybe some children playground, or more interesting office/guide to show this historical site. There is a small river, but I'm not sure whether you can swim there or not."

"This is one of the Buddhist Temple was the legacy of the reign of Singashari Kingdom in 14th century.
Candi Sumberawan was mentioned in Negarakertagama Chapter as Kasurangganan.
Thr kompleks is about 6 km from Candi Singashari ( Javanese Hindu - Budha Kingdom 1222 - 1292 )
The Kingdom that believed as the Majapahit anchestor.
This Candi Sumberawan located inside the village of Toyomarto , Kec.Singoshari, Kab Malang, Jawa Timur.
Lovely place that remind us as the beautiful place as the kadewaguruan or the students learned here.
Still used for the ritual Buddhism and have beautiful view surrounded by forest ,camping ground, and paddy field.
The two natural resources become water source of Malang Area., and all village around this Sumberawan water resources.

Ticket price is only 5K and parking ticket is 2 K each motor. Hopefully this place still remain the same the original as remind me some whorship places in Bali. Love the Toyomarto and Sumberawan.

I think I will go there again for a little bit longer., and earlier."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Architectural Uniqueness of Candi Sumberawan

Candi Sumberawan stands out in East Java for its distinct Buddhist stupa design. Unlike the more common Hindu temples with intricate reliefs and multiple structures, Sumberawan is characterized by a single, bell-shaped stupa atop a square base. This architectural style is a clear indicator of its Buddhist origins and its construction during the Majapahit era, likely in the 14th century. The absence of elaborate carvings and its minimalist aesthetic are not a sign of incompleteness, but rather a reflection of a specific Buddhist architectural tradition that emphasizes simplicity and spiritual symbolism. Instagram+3

The stupa's form is reminiscent of Buddhist structures found in other parts of Southeast Asia, suggesting cultural exchange and the spread of Buddhist practices during that period. Its construction from andesite stone further connects it to the typical building materials used in ancient Javanese temples. The temple's design, with its lack of stairs and unadorned base, contributes to its serene and contemplative aura, inviting visitors to focus on the spiritual essence rather than ornate details. Instagram+1

This unique form makes Candi Sumberawan a significant archaeological find, offering valuable insights into the religious landscape of the Majapahit Kingdom. It serves as a testament to the diversity of religious expressions in ancient Java and the enduring influence of Buddhism. Instagram+1

Spiritual Significance and Local Legends

The name 'Sumberawan' itself translates to 'holy spring,' highlighting the spiritual importance of the natural water source located near the temple. This spring is considered sacred by locals, and its water is sometimes collected for rituals or blessings. The presence of this natural resource likely contributed to the site's selection for a place of worship and meditation. Reddit

Local legends add another layer to the temple's mystique. It is believed that King Hayam Wuruk of the Majapahit Kingdom once visited this site during his travels. This association with royalty further elevates its historical and cultural significance, making it a place of reverence for many. The temple is also mentioned in the ancient Javanese epic, the Negarakertagama, under the name 'Kasurangganan,' underscoring its historical prominence. InstagramReddit

Today, Candi Sumberawan continues to be a site for Buddhist rituals and spiritual journeys.
