What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Bhimashankar for its divine spiritual ambiance and breathtaking natural beauty, especially during the monsoon with its lush greenery and waterfalls. However, some reviews point to poor management, encroachment, and a lack of cleanliness around the temple premises, suggesting potential for improvement in visitor experience and infrastructure.
"It's such a beautiful place. The weather was more beautiful and pleasant than heaven.
Management is enjoying the power but doesn't have any plans to make this place beautiful. There was too much encroachment on the way and management was too poor. We can easily see the dirtiest things around and no proper arrangements for devotees in temple. This place can be made beautiful as nature has provided its blessings."

"I went to Bhimashankar jyotirling via bus. It was so nice journey, the view was too beautiful. You can go via your private vehicle as well . There are many scenic view points in between including a dam , waterfalls as well. While reaching near to the temple it's cold so carry a jacket to cover your self..there are spots where you can eat as well."

"Devine. Visited Bhimashankar Temple during the monsoon (August) and it was a memorable experience. The approach roads before the temple area were in poor condition, but once you reach, there’s ample parking available for cars. Be prepared for a long queue, especially on weekends, and the temple is accessible by a series of steps leading down. The atmosphere was serene and the lush greenery around in monsoon added to the spiritual feel. Om Namah Shivay."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
While the temple visit is a core experience, consider the 2km walk from the parking to the temple; a bus is available if little legs get tired. The journey itself has scenic spots that can be pointed out to kids. However, be mindful of the crowds on weekends and the potentially poor road conditions, which might make travel with very young children a bit more challenging.

It is highly recommended to hire a local guide for any treks. They possess invaluable knowledge of the trails, local flora and fauna, and can ensure your safety in the sometimes unpredictable sanctuary environment, especially during the monsoon. Be prepared for varied weather conditions and ensure you have appropriate gear for hiking.

Many visitors describe the experience as deeply rejuvenating for the soul, with opportunities for rituals like Rudraabhishek. The journey to the temple, especially the walk from the parking, can be a meditative experience in itself, particularly when surrounded by the misty, natural beauty of the sanctuary.

The Spiritual Significance of Bhimashankar
The temple itself is a marvel of Nagara-style architecture, with intricate carvings and a design that has stood the test of centuries. Its location, nestled in the Sahyadri hills, adds to its mystical aura, often described as a 'walk in the clouds' during the monsoon season.
Devotees often perform rituals like Rudraabhishek here, seeking purification and spiritual upliftment. The experience is not just about visiting a temple, but about immersing oneself in a place steeped in ancient lore and divine energy.
Exploring the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary
During the monsoon season, the sanctuary transforms into an emerald paradise. Lush green foliage, mist-covered trails, and numerous cascading waterfalls create a breathtaking spectacle. Treks through the sanctuary, like the Bhimashankar to Bhorgiri trek, offer an immersive experience with streams, dense forests, and stunning natural beauty.
However, visitors should be aware that the sanctuary's terrain can be challenging, especially during the rains. Slippery roads and paths are common, and some areas might pose risks. The administration has sometimes banned entry to certain risky zones for safety. For those planning to trek, hiring a local guide is highly recommended to ensure a safe and enriching exploration.
Navigating Bhimashankar: Travel & Logistics
Upon arrival, the car park is located about 2 kilometers from the main temple. Visitors can choose to walk this distance, enjoying the surroundings, or opt for a local bus service that ferries people between the parking area and the temple entrance. Be prepared for long queues, especially on weekends and during peak pilgrimage seasons, as the temple is a major draw.
It's important to note that the approach roads can be in poor condition, particularly during the monsoon. Visitors are also advised to carry a jacket as the higher altitude means cooler temperatures, even during pleasant weather. The temple itself is accessible via a series of steps leading down, adding to the pilgrimage experience.
