What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Gundert Bungalow as a peaceful, serene, and historically significant site, particularly for its connection to the first Malayalam dictionary. The colonial architecture and lush surroundings are highlighted as beautiful. While some digital exhibits are noted as non-functional, the informative staff and affordable entry make it a worthwhile visit. It's considered a hidden gem deserving more attention.
"Visited the Herman Gundert Bungalow in Thalassery today, and it was a surprisingly peaceful and serene experience. The bungalow itself is beautiful, with charming old-world architecture and a calm, quiet atmosphere that makes you feel connected to history. Thankfully, there was someone there to explain the life and contributions of Hermann Gundert, and they did so fluently and beautifully, bringing the story to life. However, most of the digital screens at the site were not functional, which I was told is due to pending software updates. Despite this, the place is still a hidden gem, offering a tranquil escape and a chance to immerse yourself in Thalassery’s rich cultural heritage. It’s sad that such a remarkable historical site isn’t more crowded, even on a Sunday, and it truly deserves more attention from visitors."

"Found this gem of a museum via the DTCP portal.
This stately bungalow with idyllic surroundings was called the Illikunnu house, and it was the erstwhile residence of Herman Gundert and his wife Julie. It has been converted into a museum in 2021.
Clean, well-maintained, informative museum - the interactive exhibits made the museum more interesting.
There is also a library dedicated to Nobel Laureate Herman Hesse, who was also the grandson of Herman Gundert.
We were the only ones in the museum and the guide was on leave, but the security guard took the initiative to explain the interactive exhibits to us. We appreciate his initiative."
