What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Jakhu Temple for its spiritual ambiance, the awe-inspiring Hanuman statue, and the breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. The trek up is considered rewarding, though the abundance of monkeys requires vigilance. Some find the ropeway expensive and snacks overpriced.
"A very quiet and divine place to visit. There are taxi and ropeway available (the taxis are much more affordable- from the main market around 100 per person if you are in a group, ropeway is quite expensive tbh). But if you can, I highly recommend going on foot, it's quite a fun challenge. Please don't have specs or food items in view as there are monkeys all around the temple and the route to the temple. There are snacks available near the temple, but I found them to be quite expensive for the quality, so taking light snacks could be an option."

"Jakhu Temple in Shimla is a peaceful and spiritual place with a huge Hanuman statue and beautiful hill views. The cable car ride and surroundings make the visit enjoyable. Only drawback is the monkeys around, otherwise a very nice experience."

"The climb up can be a bit challenging, especially if you’re walking from the Ridge, but it’s worth it. For those who prefer comfort, taxis and a ropeway are available. Along the way, you’ll notice troops of monkeys (after all, it is Hanuman’s temple), so it’s best to be cautious and avoid carrying food or loose items in your hands.
What I really loved was the serenity once you reach the top. Despite being a popular attraction, the temple retains a peaceful aura. The views of Shimla and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking, especially during early morning or sunset hours. Inside the temple, the spiritual atmosphere feels calming, making it a rewarding stop for both devotees and tourists.
Overall, Jakhu Temple is a blend of spirituality, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you go for faith, photography, or simply to enjoy the views, it’s an experience you shouldn’t miss in Shimla."

The Legend and Significance of Jakhu Temple
At the heart of the temple complex stands a colossal 108-foot statue of Lord Hanuman, which is one of the tallest in the world at this altitude. This imposing figure is visible from many parts of Shimla, serving as a prominent landmark. The sheer scale of the statue is awe-inspiring and a major draw for visitors, whether they are religious pilgrims or curious tourists.
Beyond its religious importance, Jakhu Temple is also a place of natural beauty. Perched at the highest point in Shimla, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, the town, and the majestic Himalayan peaks. This combination of spirituality, mythology, and natural splendor makes Jakhu Temple a unique and memorable destination.
Navigating the Ascent: Trekking vs. Transport
For a more convenient journey, taxis are readily available from Shimla's main market. Shared taxis can be a cost-effective option for groups. These will take you as close to the temple as possible, minimizing the walking distance. Another popular option is the ropeway, which provides a comfortable and scenic ride up the mountain. While it offers stunning aerial views, it is generally the most expensive choice.
Each mode of transport offers a different experience. The trek is for the adventurous, the taxi is practical, and the ropeway is for those seeking comfort and views. Consider your fitness level, budget, and desired experience when choosing how to reach this sacred site.
The Famous Shimla Monkeys: A Word of Caution
Visitors are strongly advised to secure all valuables such as sunglasses, hats, mobile phones, and cameras. Avoid carrying food items openly, as the scent can attract them. If you are wearing spectacles, it's best to keep them safely stored. Many travelers recommend keeping your hands free and your belongings tucked away in a bag.
While the monkeys can be entertaining to watch from a distance, it's important to maintain a respectful distance and avoid provoking them. Do not attempt to feed them, as this can encourage aggressive behavior. Being aware and prepared will ensure a safer and more enjoyable visit to Jakhu Temple.
