"Lansdowne Building, initially called Range Bazaar, is a commercial complex and a heritage building in Mysore, India.

This over-a-century old building was built to facilitate basic needs in commercial spaces such as pharmacy, refreshment rooms, bookstalls, hotel, printing presses, desktop publishing, letter typing, stationery, photo framing and wallpaper outlets, and other business establishments. The structure was built using wood, iron, limestone and around 200 girders. Kannada poet D. V. Gundappa called it the "ornamental festoon of the city".

The building was commissioned by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar X to honour the visit of the Viceroy and Governor General of India Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, the Marquess of Lansdowne."

History Enthusiasts

For those fascinated by colonial-era architecture and urban development, the Lansdowne Building offers a unique, albeit somber, subject. Its original purpose as a hub for essential services and its commemorative design provide insight into the city's past. While its current state may be disheartening, the structure itself still tells a story of a bygone era. Reddit

Be prepared for a less-than-pristine experience. The building's heritage value is primarily in its historical context and architectural remnants, rather than an actively preserved tourist attraction. Visiting during daylight hours is recommended for safety and to best observe the remaining architectural details. Reddit

A Glimpse into Mysore's Commercial Past

The Lansdowne Building, originally known as Range Bazaar, stands as a testament to Mysore's commercial vibrancy in the late 19th century. Commissioned by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, it was designed to commemorate the visit of the Viceroy and Governor General of India, Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, the Marquess of Lansdowne, in 1892. Its construction, a blend of wood, iron, and limestone, was intended to house a variety of essential businesses, including pharmacies, refreshment rooms, bookstalls, printing presses, and stationery outlets. Kannada poet D. V. Gundappa famously described it as the "ornamental festoon of the city," highlighting its architectural significance. Reddit

Despite its historical importance and architectural merit, recent observations suggest the building is in a state of neglect. Some accounts describe it as abandoned, with parts of the structure showing damage and being misused as public toilets. This stark contrast between its intended grandeur and current condition is a poignant reflection of urban heritage management challenges. While it remains a landmark, visitors should be aware of its potentially deteriorated state and exercise caution. Reddit
