"🏕️I recently visited Hanging Garden after many years, and honestly, it was a little disappointing. I had been here around 10-12 years ago during my college days, and at that time, the garden was absolutely beautiful. It used to be very big, full of colorful flowers, well-maintained green grass, and spacious sitting areas — the whole atmosphere was so peaceful and fresh.

But now, most of the area has been reduced, there are very few flowers, and the green grass has almost disappeared. The beauty and charm which it had earlier is definitely missing now. I still remember how beautiful it used to be during my college days — full of greenery, colorful flowers, and spacious sitting areas. I miss that charm.

Giving 4 stars only because of the memories attached to this place.😊"

"Visited the Hanging Gardens on Malabar Hill, and it’s a fun and refreshing spot in the middle of the city.
• Attractions: The famous giant shoe structure is a highlight, especially for kids and families.
• Layout: Spread out across a vast area with neatly maintained gardens, pathways, and viewpoints overlooking Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea.
• Experience: Walking down into the valley area gives a sense of space and greenery you don’t often find in Mumbai.
• Vibe: Calm, breezy, and good for a casual stroll, picnic, or just some downtime.

Overall, Hanging Gardens is a great place to relax, enjoy the views, and explore—a simple but worthwhile escape in South Mumbai."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

A Garden Built on Water

The Hanging Gardens, officially known as Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens, are a remarkable feat of urban planning. They were strategically built atop one of Mumbai's largest water reservoirs, constructed in 1880. This innovative design not only provided a beautiful green space but also protected the vital water supply beneath from contamination. The terraced structure, reminiscent of the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon, offers a unique perspective on the city. Reddit

This fusion of functionality and aesthetics is a testament to the foresight of the British colonial era engineers and the visionaries who named the gardens after Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, a key figure in Mumbai's municipal development. The gardens spread over 3.5 hectares, showcasing a diverse range of flora, including seasonal blooms and meticulously pruned hedges. Reddit

Visitors can explore walking paths lined with bougainvillea and hibiscus, enjoying the tranquility that belies its location atop a bustling city. The presence of over 300 plant species and documented birdlife adds to the ecological richness of this urban oasis. Reddit

Views That Inspire

Perched on Malabar Hill, the Hanging Gardens offer unparalleled panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and Mumbai's iconic coastline. The most celebrated vista is the 'Queen's Necklace,' the crescent-shaped Marine Drive, which sparkles like a string of pearls at dusk. This vantage point provides a breathtaking perspective of the city's sprawling architecture meeting the vast ocean. Reddit

From the garden's edge, you can also see Chowpatty Beach and the historic domes of colonial Mumbai. On clear days, the view extends to Back Bay and the distant industrial silhouettes of the city's docks. The framing of these views by frangipani branches and monsoon clouds adds a dramatic flair to the scenery. Reddit

These views have inspired artists, poets, and residents for decades, offering a moment of reflection and appreciation for Mumbai's unique urban landscape. It's a place where the city's energy seems to pause, allowing visitors to connect with its grandeur and natural beauty. Reddit

A Tale of Two Gardens

Hanging Gardens and Kamala Nehru Park, though distinct, are often visited together as they are located across the road from each other on Malabar Hill. While Hanging Gardens is known for its formal layout, topiaries, and sea views, Kamala Nehru Park holds a special charm with its quirky attractions. Reddit
