Reviews Summary

Mallalli Falls is lauded for its stunning beauty, especially during the monsoon when the water flow is at its peak. Visitors appreciate the scenic drive and the rewarding trek down the steps, though the climb back up can be challenging. While some find the view from the base excellent, others suggest higher vantage points offer a better perspective due to fencing.

"The falls is really beautiful, especially during the monsoons.
To see the falls from really close you've to get down abt 615 steps...
My advice is not to go near the falls as the view from up close is not that great with all the fencing that's been put to safeguard the tourists.
You can get an awesome view from slightly higher up rather than from the base."

"Mallali Falls, near Somwarpet in Coorg, Karnataka, is a majestic 200-foot waterfall formed by the River Kumaradhara, surrounded by dense forests and coffee estates of the Western Ghats. The drive itself is scenic, but the highlight is the trek of around 500–600 steps down to the viewpoint. The descent offers incredible views of the valley, while the climb back up can be quite tiring but rewarding.

The best time to visit is from July to October, when the waterfall is at its most powerful and the landscape is lush. Exploring the site typically takes 2–3 hours, including the trek, time at the base, and the return climb. Facilities are minimal, with parking and small stalls selling tea, water, and snacks, while accommodation and restaurants are available in Somwarpet or Madikeri. Carry sturdy shoes, drinking water, and a raincoat. Cameras are safe if kept in a waterproof pouch, as the mist near the base is strong. Avoid plastics, slippery footwear, and heavy baggage to enjoy the raw beauty of Mallali Falls."

"Absolutely stunning waterfall during the monsoon.
You can take a view from the top. However if you wamt to have an amazing close look and feel the fresh mist and water sprinkled on your face, you need to go down the 500+ stairs but the view will be worth it."

For Different Travelers

Tailored advice for your travel style

👨‍👩‍👧 Families with Kids

Mallalli Falls can be a wonderful outing for families, but requires careful planning. The main challenge is the trek down and up the 500-600 steps. Ensure children are supervised at all times, especially on the slippery steps and near the water. Pack plenty of water and snacks, as facilities are limited. Consider if your children are comfortable with such a trek; a stroller is not feasible. The view from the top might be sufficient for very young children who cannot manage the stairs. Reddit

For a more comfortable experience, visiting on a weekday morning can help avoid larger crowds. While the falls are beautiful, prioritize safety and ensure everyone in the family is adequately prepared for the physical demands of the trek. The experience can be rewarding if managed with care and appropriate precautions. Reddit

🚶 Adventure Seekers & Trekkers

Mallalli Falls offers a satisfying trekking experience for adventure enthusiasts. The descent and ascent of 500-600 steps provide a good workout, with the reward being the spectacular views of the multi-tiered waterfall. The surrounding landscape of the Western Ghats adds to the appeal, offering a chance to immerse yourself in nature. InstagramReddit

For those who enjoy a challenge, the monsoon season presents an even more thrilling experience due to the increased water flow and potentially slippery conditions. Sturdy trekking shoes are non-negotiable. Consider carrying a basic first-aid kit and ensuring you have enough water to stay hydrated throughout the trek. The raw beauty and the physical engagement make this a memorable destination for trekkers. Reddit

📸 Photographers

Mallalli Falls is a dream location for photographers, especially during the monsoon. The dramatic cascades, lush green surroundings, and the sheer power of the water offer numerous photographic opportunities. Capture the grandeur of the falls from the top viewpoint, or get creative with shots of the water's movement and the mist from the base. Instagram+1

Remember to protect your gear from the mist by using waterproof bags or covers. The steps themselves can also make for interesting foreground elements in your shots. Early mornings or late afternoons might offer softer light, but the raw energy of the falls during peak monsoon is often the most sought-after subject. Be mindful of safety while maneuvering for the perfect shot. Reddit

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Trek Down: A Rewarding Challenge

The journey to the base of Mallalli Falls is an adventure in itself. Visitors are greeted with a descent of approximately 500-600 steps, a number that can feel daunting but is consistently described as worth the effort. The path winds through lush vegetation, offering glimpses of the roaring water as you get closer. The climb back up, however, is where the real test lies. It's a significant physical exertion, so being prepared with good stamina and sturdy footwear is crucial. Many travelers recommend taking it slow, pausing to catch your breath, and enjoying the changing perspectives of the falls and the valley. InstagramReddit

Pro Tip: While the view from the base is immersive, some reviewers suggest that the fencing can detract from the natural beauty. They recommend finding vantage points slightly higher up for a more unobstructed and arguably more scenic view of the entire cascade. This offers a different, yet equally captivating, perspective of the falls' grandeur. Reddit

Monsoon Majesty: The Best Time to Visit

Mallalli Falls truly comes alive during the monsoon season, typically from July to October. This is when the Kumaradhara River swells, transforming the falls into a powerful, gushing spectacle. The surrounding Western Ghats are at their most vibrant, draped in emerald green foliage, making the entire landscape breathtakingly beautiful. The mist generated by the powerful cascade adds to the dramatic atmosphere, creating a truly immersive experience. InstagramReddit

However, visiting during this time also means being prepared for wet conditions. The steps can be slippery, and the spray from the falls can drench you. This is why carrying a raincoat or purchasing one from local vendors is highly recommended. Despite the potential for getting wet, the sheer force and beauty of the falls during the monsoon are unparalleled and a major draw for visitors seeking nature's raw power. Reddit

Facilities and What to Expect

When planning your visit to Mallalli Falls, it's important to manage expectations regarding facilities. The area is primarily a natural attraction, meaning amenities are quite basic. You'll find parking available, and small stalls selling essentials like drinking water, tea, and snacks. These are convenient for quick refreshments but don't expect a full-fledged restaurant or extensive services. Reddit

For more substantial meals and accommodation, visitors will need to travel to nearby towns like Somwarpet or Madikeri. These towns offer a range of hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants serving local Coorgi cuisine and other popular dishes. Therefore, it's advisable to have your meals before or after your visit to the falls, or to pack your own food if you plan to spend an extended period enjoying the scenery. Reddit
