Exploring the Backwaters: A Traveler's Guide
For shorter excursions, shikara boats or smaller motorized canoes are available. These are ideal for exploring narrower canals and getting closer to the natural beauty. While many find the experience incredibly soothing and picturesque, some travelers have noted that the scenery can sometimes be less dramatic than in other famous backwater regions like Alleppey, with more focus on canals and village life. It's also worth noting that some visitors have had less than ideal experiences with certain boating operators, so researching and choosing reputable companies is key to a positive outing.
When planning your backwater adventure, consider the best time to visit. The monsoon season (June to August) brings lush greenery and fewer crowds, making it a beautiful, albeit wet, time to explore. The post-monsoon and winter months (October to March) offer pleasant weather, ideal for enjoying the sunshine on the water. Regardless of when you visit, allow yourself ample time to simply relax and absorb the peaceful ambiance of the Kerala backwaters.
Lighthouse Beach: Kovalam's Iconic Hub
The beach itself is a vibrant hub, lined with numerous cafes, restaurants, and resorts. It's a great place to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy a variety of cuisines, from fresh seafood to international dishes. During the day, you'll find people enjoying the sand and surf, while evenings come alive with a more relaxed, yet lively, atmosphere. The intermittent beams of the lighthouse at night cast an enchanting glow, adding to the beach's unique charm.
While Lighthouse Beach is a must-visit, be aware that it can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. For those seeking a slightly quieter experience, the adjacent Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach offer alternatives. However, the energy and iconic status of Lighthouse Beach make it an essential part of any Kovalam itinerary.
