What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the M.P. Birla Planetarium for its immersive dome shows and engaging astronomy exhibits, calling it a must-visit for families and students. While the facilities could see some improvement, the educational value and the spectacular visual experience of the cosmos make it a highly recommended attraction in Kolkata.
"The M. P. Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, located on Jawaharlal Nehru Road right beside St. Paul’s Cathedral and near the Maidan, is one of the most popular educational and tourist attractions in the city. Built in 1963, it is modeled after the Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi and is one of the largest planetariums in Asia. The main highlight is the giant dome theatre, where immersive shows are conducted daily in English, Hindi, and Bengali. The upgraded hybrid projection system makes the night sky, stars, constellations, and galaxies look spectacular and realistic, creating an unforgettable experience.
Apart from the dome shows, the astronomy gallery has interesting exhibits, celestial models, and scientific instruments that help visitors, especially students, learn about space and the universe. The planetarium also conducts lectures, workshops, and special educational programs, making it an excellent place for knowledge as well as entertainment.
The ticket prices are affordable (₹100–₹140 for adults, discounts for students), and show timings are convenient throughout the day. However, weekends and holidays can be quite crowded, so reaching early is recommended. Facilities like seating and washrooms could be better maintained, but the overall experience more than makes up for it.
If you are in Kolkata, the Birla Planetarium is a must-visit destination for families, students, and tourists, offering a perfect blend of science, culture, and history."

"I visited the M.P. Birla Planetarium in August 2025, and while I couldn’t explore the inside due to the huge crowd that day, the overall experience was still quite pleasant. The place was neat and well-maintained, giving a very welcoming vibe as soon as I reached.
The front garden was beautifully kept, adding a calm and refreshing atmosphere to the surroundings. The highlight was the fountain at the entrance, which really enhanced the charm of the place and made it feel even more grand.
Although I missed the chance to see the exhibits and shows inside, the outer view itself was impressive, with the planetarium’s dome structure standing tall and iconic in the heart of Kolkata.
I’ll definitely plan another visit, preferably on a less crowded day, so I can explore the inside shows and displays too. For anyone visiting, I’d suggest keeping some extra time in hand as the place usually attracts a big crowd."

"You can have a Nice experience visiting this place, lots of information about cosmic collision 💥. However choose your show timings. Presently they offer shows in three languages, Hindi, Bengali and English. We choosed a English one starting 2PM which was in English with Subject Cosmic Collision. Very Nice information, however younger kids might need a little help in understanding the show. The exhibition gallery is another attraction which a must visit. And your weight in various planets is a interesting one... every one must check...."
