Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Parvati Temple for its historical intrigue and serene spiritual ambiance, offering a peaceful contrast to the more famous erotic sculptures of Khajuraho. Its architectural details and the unique image of the Goddess Parvati are highlighted as significant draws. Some note its smaller size and heavily restored state, suggesting it's best enjoyed as part of a broader exploration of the Khajuraho complex.

"Parvati Temple
Devi Parvati temple faces east and appears to form a part of Vishvanatha temple. Presently, dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple originally consists of a grabha-griha (sanctum), antrala (porch), and a mukha-mandapa (entrance porch). Presently, plinth of the sanctum and antrala has survived, while the mukha-mandapa is completely lost. The sanctum is panchratha in plan and the bhadra shows additional projections. The sanctum is enshrined with an elegant image of Uma is sama-bhanga pose with her vehicle godha (iguana). However, four-armed Vishnu seated on Garuda shown on lintel indicates that this temple might have been built for any Vaishnav deity.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that this temple was built along with Vishwanatha Temple between 950 – 1000 CE."

"This temple, situated immediately to the south-west of the Visvanatha is one its subsidiaries and a heavily- restored small sanctum and porch. The porch is completely lost and of the sanctum only the plinth has survived. The doorway belongs to a Vaishnava shrine as is indicated by a Vishnu figure on the middle of the lintel, while the image in the sanctum represents Gauri with the Godhika as her vehicle. The Architectural Evolution of Parvati Temple

The Parvati Temple in Khajuraho presents a fascinating case study in religious and architectural adaptation. Originally constructed between 950 and 1000 CE, it was likely dedicated to Lord Vishnu, as evidenced by the Vaishnavite imagery on its lintel, specifically a depiction of Vishnu seated on Garuda. This original dedication is a key piece of information for understanding its historical context within the Chandela dynasty's patronage of various deities. Reddit

Over time, the temple's focus shifted. Today, it enshrines an elegant image of Goddess Parvati (Uma) in a sama-bhanga pose, accompanied by her vehicle, the iguana. This transformation from a Vaishnavite shrine to a dedicated temple for Parvati highlights the dynamic nature of religious practices and the evolving importance of deities within the region. While the porch (mukha-mandapa) is lost and the sanctum's plinth is heavily restored, the surviving elements still showcase the skilled craftsmanship of the Chandela era, including its pancharatha plan and bhadra projections. Reddit

Despite its smaller scale compared to some of the more prominent Khajuraho temples, the Parvati Temple offers a unique insight into the historical layers of the site. It's a testament to the Chandela rulers' architectural prowess and their ability to adapt and repurpose structures, making it a noteworthy stop for those interested in the deeper history of Khajuraho beyond its most famous sculptures.
