What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Beas Kund is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, with trekkers consistently praising the pristine lake and the magical valley views. The journey itself is as rewarding as the destination, offering a moderate challenge with stunning scenery. While the trail is generally well-marked, the return navigation and stream crossings require careful attention and preparation.
"This is a wonderful day hike that I completed from Dhundi, and back is about 6.5 hours. The info from guide companies is simply commercial. It's shorter than they say and can easily be accomplished in one day if you leave early. The trail is marked with white arrows painted on rocks. There are multiple campsites that appear on Google Maps and in the field that serve as way points. With that said, the hike back (especially through the boulder field) is tougher on your navigation skills because there are no arrows on the return trip. So, try to remember your path, or route find your way to and from the trail by looking backwards every now and then for the arrows. Otherwise, the trail is easy to follow. It is slick in the rain and becomes much more technical. Good boots and trekking poles helped me a lot, along with a good pack and the right emergency equipment. Pro tip: There are many stream crossings, but when you hit the "big" river crossing, use your trekking poles as a depth finder. You will get wet. Even if you hike way upstream, it is very difficult to cross. Know the water depth before you start wading. I dropped my boots, socks, and pants and tossed them across to the other side with my pack. Then, I crossed with the trekking poles to support my balance. I dried off with an extra quick drying tee shirt, got dressed, and continued the hike. One guide was taking his team on a convoluted route through the freezing water, and one of his trekkers quit and turned around before eventually making it with some assistance and encouragement. It is a beautiful and fun hike with a few technical sections, so I'd call it moderate. Have fun!"

Date: 4th Oct 2024. Weather: mostly clear with little drizzle and a shower before sunset. Season: fall, onset of winter, no snow on the trail (only on the peaks, glaciers)"

Navigating the Beas Kund Trail
Stream crossings are a notable feature of this trek. While there are multiple smaller crossings, one 'big' river crossing requires careful attention. Using trekking poles as depth finders is a highly recommended strategy. Be prepared to get wet; some trekkers opt to remove boots and socks, toss their gear across, and then wade through with poles for balance. Knowing the water depth before attempting to cross is paramount to avoid unexpected difficulties.
Overall, while the trail is generally easy to follow, the lack of return markers and potential for challenging water crossings elevate the trek's difficulty. It's a beautiful and fun hike, but the moderate rating is well-earned due to these technical sections.
Best Time and Conditions for Beas Kund
Summer months, from April to June, are also a good time to trek, with blooming flora adding to the landscape's beauty. However, this period can also see more visitors. The monsoon season, from July to August, should generally be avoided due to heavy rainfall, which can make the trails slippery, increase river levels, and pose risks of landslides.
When planning your visit, be aware that weather can change rapidly in the mountains. Even in fall, you might encounter light drizzle or showers, as noted by visitors. Dressing in layers and carrying waterproof gear is always a wise precaution, regardless of the season.
