What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Shaukat Mahal is a historical monument with a unique architectural blend, though its condition is mixed, with parts in disrepair and others occupied by residents or housing popular restaurants. Visitors often find the surrounding food scene, particularly Al Amaan and The Gumbad, to be a major highlight, sometimes overshadowing the Mahal itself.
"It is not worthwhile to visit this Mahal. It may be historical, but the location has been lost, and it is home of many people. It is not a place to visit, and you will be disappointed if you do. Instead, there are two MAhals nearby, one of which is under renovation, and the other is GOUHAR MAHAL. Its infrastructure has been dismantled and is no longer maintained by anyone. It feels more like a home than a Mahal or an old house. I was very disappointed to put this on my list of places to visit. As a result, it is not necessary to pay a visit."

"An almost 200-year old monument, which is still occupied by residents, in spite of almost being in ruins.
It is believed to have been constructed sometimes in the beginning of the 19th century as a wedding gift to Sikander Jehan Begum, the first full-fledged female ruler of Bhopal.
I was unable to visit inside, only viewed it from outside. It is indeed a majestic monument, and in several parts one can imagine it's foregone splendour.
Today a very good hotel operates on the premises."

"Shaukat Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings in Bhopal which has a distinct architecture - a blend of Indo-Islamic and European styles.
The roof of the building is adorned with a series of complicated triangular-shaped arches and the exteriors have beautiful patterns, showing artistic brilliance.
Its renovation is in progress."
