"An excellent wildeass sanctuary to visit within 100 kms range of Ahmedabad. Worth because you get to see a lot of migratory birds along with wildeass. Flamingoes, Spoonbills, Pelicans and many more in large numbers. We were late as per the guide, as the December is the best month to visit. It is deep inside from the entry point and guide is required. The guides are very cooperative and charges Rs. 500/- in addition to entry charges. Highly recommended for bird lovers."

📸 📸 Photography
The Indian Wild Ass, migratory birds (especially flamingos), the vast salt desert landscapes, and the dramatic sunrises and sunsets are prime subjects.
A telephoto lens (200-400mm or longer) is essential for wildlife. A wide-angle lens is great for capturing the expansive landscapes. A sturdy tripod can be helpful for low-light conditions.
The 'golden hours' – shortly after sunrise and before sunset – offer the most beautiful light for landscape and wildlife photography.
Generally, photography is allowed. However, avoid using flash photography directly on wildlife, as it can disturb them. Always respect the animals' space.
Use a wide-angle lens and include elements like the horizon, salt patterns, or distant wildlife to convey scale. Shooting during golden hour will add depth and color.

The Indian Wild Ass: A Conservation Success Story
These hardy animals are adapted to the harsh, saline environment of the Rann, surviving on sparse vegetation and saline water. Their presence signifies the health of this delicate ecosystem. Visitors often describe the sight of wild asses against the backdrop of the vast salt desert as 'breathtaking' and 'unforgettable.'
Conservation in the LRK is an ongoing effort, involving local communities and wildlife authorities. The sanctuary's success highlights the importance of protecting such unique habitats for endangered species.
Avian Paradise: A Haven for Migratory Birds
Beyond flamingos, birdwatchers can spot a remarkable variety of species, including spoonbills, pelicans, cranes, raptors, and numerous smaller waders and passerines. The sheer density and diversity of birdlife make it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers alike. A knowledgeable local guide can significantly enhance your birdwatching experience, helping you identify species and understand their behavior.
December and January are considered the peak months for birdwatching, offering the best chances to witness the full spectacle of migration. The early morning and late afternoon safari slots are particularly rewarding for observing bird activity.
The Unique Landscape of the Little Rann
During the monsoon season, parts of the Rann can be submerged, creating temporary wetlands that attract even more birdlife. However, the dry season, from October to March, is when the landscape is most accessible for safaris and offers the best conditions for spotting wildlife. The cracked earth patterns and the shimmering salt flats create incredible photographic opportunities, especially during sunrise and sunset.
Exploring this unique terrain by jeep safari is an essential part of the LRK experience. The open, flat landscape allows for long-distance views, making it possible to spot the wild ass and other animals from afar. The sheer scale of the Rann can be awe-inspiring, offering a sense of profound solitude and connection with nature.
