What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the serene beauty and unique experience of cruising the Alappuzha Backwaters, often calling it 'magical' and the 'Venice of the East.' The tranquility, lush scenery, and local culture are major draws. However, some find houseboats can be crowded, have limited routes, and experience issues with mosquitoes at night.
"It's a pure beauty of nature. We've visited here many times either with family or friends.
In most of the times we taken some houseboat services or tourist boat services. But in the recent time, we planned for a change and taken a small open boat for the 360 degree view and also for taking photos from all directions.
It was very awesome experience. We wished it would never end. Also the boat driver taken us for some adventure.
It's a must-visit place at least once for everyone in the world."

"Alleppey backwaters is nothing short of magical. Often referred to as the “Venice of the East,” this serene destination in Kerala offers a unique blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and cultural richness. Cruising through the interconnected canals, lakes, and lagoons on a traditional houseboat is an experience unlike any other. The lush green paddy fields, swaying coconut palms, and charming villages along the banks create a postcard-perfect setting.
The houseboats are well-equipped with modern amenities, and the warm hospitality of the staff adds to the charm. Freshly cooked Kerala cuisine, especially the seafood, is a treat for the taste buds. You can choose between a day cruise or an overnight stay, though spending a night under the stars in the calm waters is highly recommended for a truly immersive experience.
One practical tip: book your houseboat in advance, especially during peak tourist season. Also, carry cash, as digital payments may not be widely accepted in some areas. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, romance, or a glimpse into local life, Alleppey backwaters deliver on all fronts. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Kerala — peaceful, picturesque, and soul-soothing."

"Before exploring Kerala i thought this would be the best compared to munnar, but it's too hot at this place and a lot of mosquitoes at night where the house boat is parked.
I don't recommend a single room house boat , prefer deluxe boats with 3-4 rooms unless your priority is privacy.
House boats roam for 1-2 hours and later park at a place and they don't cover large areas and won't stop at places we want. If you want to roam a specific area you need to take small boats to take control of places to see.
My dinner plan at the boat was upset, I couldn't capture pics at that lighting and we can't have a peaceful dinner due to a lot of mosquitoes.
I suggest taking mini boats for roaming and book a good resort and have a peaceful dinner near the pool. If you want to stay at a house boat compulsory then book a shared boat with 3 or 4 rooms for a low cost compared to a single room one and pre discuss what they cover and where they will take"

Navigating the Backwaters: Houseboats vs. Other Options
For a more intimate and flexible exploration, consider kayaking or taking a small local boat. Kayaking allows you to navigate narrower canals, get closer to village life, and enjoy a more active experience. Local ferries are also a very affordable way to travel between villages and experience the backwaters like a local.
When choosing a houseboat, consider whether a private houseboat or a shared option best suits your needs and budget. Private boats offer more privacy and customization, while shared boats can be more economical. Always clarify the itinerary and what's included before booking.
The Unique Landscape of Kuttanad
Exploring Kuttanad offers a glimpse into a distinct way of life. The region is crisscrossed by numerous canals and rivers, and life here is intrinsically linked to the water. You'll see traditional farming practices, local fishing methods, and the daily routines of the villagers who live along the waterways.
Many houseboat tours and smaller boat excursions will take you through Kuttanad, allowing you to witness this unique ecosystem firsthand. The visual contrast between the water, the lush green fields, and the simple village life is truly captivating and a highlight for many visitors.
Best Practices for a Memorable Houseboat Stay
While onboard, embrace the relaxed pace. Enjoy the freshly prepared Kerala cuisine, particularly the local seafood. However, be prepared for potential challenges like mosquitoes in the evening, especially when the boat is docked. Carrying effective mosquito repellent is highly recommended.
For those seeking a more immersive experience or concerned about the limitations of standard houseboat routes, consider combining your stay with day trips on smaller boats or kayaking. This allows for more flexibility and access to narrower canals and local life. Ultimately, a houseboat stay is about tranquility and soaking in the natural beauty, so pack accordingly and be open to the unique rhythm of backwater life.
