"Skútustaðagígar is a fantastic and quick stop on the south side of Lake Mývatn. It's an easy walk from the parking lot, and the stunning views make it well worth the brief detour. From the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by vibrant green fields where Icelandic horses often graze. The craters themselves are a geological marvel, formed by steam explosions when molten lava flowed over the wetlands. It's an incredible example of volcanic activity and a beautiful spot to take some photos and appreciate the unique landscape. Highly recommended for a short, scenic break!"

"This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago.

You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set of binoculars."

"Lovely place to walk around and enjoy the views. A few bugs still in early September, but manageable."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Geology of Pseudocraters

Skútustaðagígar offers a fascinating glimpse into a specific type of volcanic activity: the formation of pseudocraters. Unlike true craters formed by direct volcanic eruptions, these formations at Skútustaðagígar were created around 2,300 years ago when hot lava from the Lúdentarborgir and Þrengslaborgir eruptions flowed over the wet, marshy ground of ancient Lake Mývatn. The intense heat caused the water beneath the lava to rapidly turn into steam. This steam then exploded upwards through the molten rock, creating these distinctive, rounded depressions that resemble craters but lack a direct connection to a magma chamber. TikTokInstagram

This process is relatively rare, occurring only when lava encounters water or water-saturated ground. Similar formations can be found in other volcanic regions, most famously in Hawaii, and even on Mars, highlighting the universal geological processes at play. Walking among these pseudocraters provides a tangible connection to Iceland's dynamic volcanic past and the powerful forces that shaped its landscape. Instagram

Visitors can explore the pseudocrater field via a network of walking paths. While you can walk up to and look into some of the craters, their true geological significance and unique appearance are often best appreciated from a slight distance, allowing you to see the chains of these formations against the backdrop of Lake Mývatn. Nature and Birdlife Around Lake Mývatn

The wetlands surrounding Skútustaðagígar are a vital habitat for a diverse array of birdlife, making it a prime location for birdwatching. The shallow, nutrient-rich waters of Lake Mývatn attract numerous species, especially during the breeding season. Visitors with binoculars can spot various ducks, waders, and other waterfowl that thrive in this unique ecosystem. Reddit

Beyond the birds, the area is characterized by its lush, green vegetation, which contrasts beautifully with the volcanic landscapes. This verdant environment provides a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and offers opportunities to observe the local flora. The presence of Icelandic horses grazing in the fields adds to the idyllic scenery, creating a quintessential Icelandic vista. TikTok

It's worth noting that while the natural beauty is a major draw, the area can also attract midges, particularly during the warmer months. Bringing insect repellent is a practical tip to ensure a more comfortable experience while enjoying the natural wonders. Reddit
