"It's definitely a once in a lifetime experience to be able to visit a blue ice cave during the summer. Normally the blue ice cave is open from Oct to Apr every year, but it turns out that the tour was still open in Jul when we visited Iceland last year, but you can see the ice cave melting. I booked the tour from guidetoiceland website (make sure you select the tour that departs from the Jokursalon). The bus ride took about an hour and it was a bumpy ride. Then you put on the shoe spikes and hike for about 15-20 min. The tour inside the cave is about 20 min."

"It’s an ice cave on the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier at Vatnajökull National Park. Very much experienced company operates the tour. The tour starts at the Jökulsárlón lake parking area. Our time was 1 pm in early October 2024. The weather was perfect. They drove 12 -14 ( a group) together in a van for more than 30 minutes. Then we have to walk for another 10/15 minutes. The walking is treacherous and my wife was unfit for that. Our guide ( an fluent English speaking lady around 25-30 years personal took hold of my wife till the cave. Without her our tour would have been incomplete. She even fixed the spike on her shoes. Then we have to walk on the glacier for 5 minutes before waiting for another 10 minutes till the previous group vacates the cave. It was a lifetime experience. As such the ice is not blue, rather covered by black ash from the volcanic mountain. But the perfect weather with bright sun rays makes the cave appear blue. The time of the day is important otherwise someone get his heartened. Over all our experience was excellent."

The Science Behind the Blue Ice
These ice caves are not permanent structures; they are dynamic and constantly changing. Meltwater streams carve intricate tunnels and chambers within the glacier, while volcanic heat can also play a role in their formation. Each year, new caves form, and old ones collapse, meaning that every visit to a Vatnajökull ice cave offers a unique and ephemeral experience. This ever-changing nature adds to their allure and makes them a living testament to the power and artistry of glacial processes.
Choosing the Right Vatnajökull Ice Cave Tour
Pay attention to the departure point and the duration of the tour. Tours departing from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon are common and convenient if you're already in the area. Be prepared for a bumpy ride in a super jeep or 4WD vehicle to reach the glacier, followed by a walk to the cave. Reading reviews and checking the company's safety record can help you make an informed decision for an unforgettable and safe exploration of these natural wonders.
