"Cute little museum about the whales of Iceland, where the life size models can be viewed. They had a cool documentary about whales on a big screen which was really interesting. The gift shop is really nice and they have plenty of things to purchase."

"It's very expensive for what it is. 30 euros is insane for one large room with a model of each kind of whale and a few lines of info about them.
We spent a rainy day there because it has 2 movies on show. One is 50 mins and one is 1hr. The longer one isn't suitable necessarily for young children. The 2016 noise movie; would be nice to see an updated movie about what has changed since then.
There's a cafe and a store. The staff were very nice. We went for free after doing Special Tours rib tour but you get a discount from doing any tour."

The Majestic Models of Whales of Iceland

The centerpiece of the Whales of Iceland museum is its impressive collection of 23 life-sized whale models. These aren't just simple replicas; they are crafted with remarkable detail, allowing visitors to truly grasp the immense scale of these marine giants. From the colossal blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, to the sleek orca and the gentle humpback, each model provides an awe-inspiring visual representation of biodiversity in the North Atlantic. The sheer size of these models creates a powerful and immersive experience, making it easy to understand why whales are so revered. Reddit

These models serve as a powerful educational tool, bringing abstract concepts of marine biology to life. Visitors can stand beside a sperm whale or crane their necks to see the underside of a fin whale, fostering a deeper appreciation for their anatomy and presence. The museum aims to educate not just about the whales themselves, but also about their habitats and the importance of their conservation, making the visual impact of the models even more meaningful. Reddit

Documentaries: A Window into the Ocean

Beyond the impressive models, Whales of Iceland features a dedicated theater showcasing documentaries about whales and marine life. Visitors can choose between two films: a shorter, perhaps more general overview, and a longer, more in-depth documentary. The longer film, in particular, has been highlighted by visitors as being incredibly informative and engaging, offering a deeper dive into whale behavior, migration patterns, and the challenges they face. Reddit

These cinematic experiences are crucial for understanding the conservation message the museum promotes. They provide context to the static models, illustrating the dynamic lives of these creatures in their natural environment. While one review mentioned the desire for an updated film, the existing documentaries are generally praised for their quality and educational value, making them a must-see part of the museum visit. Reddit

Conservation: The Heart of the Exhibit

A significant aspect of the Whales of Iceland museum is its strong emphasis on marine conservation. The exhibits and documentaries aim to educate visitors about the threats facing whale populations, such as pollution, noise disturbance, and climate change. This focus transforms the museum from a simple display of models into a platform for raising awareness and promoting responsible stewardship of our oceans. Reddit

By highlighting the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats, the museum encourages a sense of responsibility in its visitors. This educational mission is vital, especially in a country like Iceland, which has a deep connection to the sea. The museum hopes that by fostering a greater understanding and appreciation for whales, visitors will be inspired to support conservation efforts and make more sustainable choices in their own lives.
