Iceland in winter offers a wealth of unforgettable impressions thanks to its mix of magnificent landscapes, water, snow, and ice. If the weather is right, the low position of the sun creates wonderful lighting conditions; it's not without reason that it's a hotspot for photographers. Sometimes gale-force winds with dust in the air, or flying spray on the coast, or steam from the earth should not be underestimated...so be careful with your camera when changing lenses.
At the various outdoor attractions, some of the paths are very icy...spikes for your shoes are highly recommended. (We observed numerous tourists who could only manage some sections on all fours.)
A word about clothing...layering is a good idea...even in the best weather and moderately sub-zero temperatures, there were gale-force winds at times...creating a considerable amount of wind chill. Proper hiking boots or thick, lined leather boots with decent soles are a must."
