Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the otherworldly beauty of Eldhraun's moss-covered lava fields, a stark reminder of Iceland's volcanic power. While the accessibility along the Ring Road is a major plus, the critical need to protect the fragile moss is a recurring theme in reviews. InstagramReddit

"The Eldhraun lava field is located along the Ring Road near Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the south of Iceland. There is a small free carpark and opportunity to walk through a small section of this massive lava field that covered 565 sq km, the second largest in Iceland.

The Eldraun field occurred during an eruption in the late 1700s. Today the lava is covered with unique Icelandic moss which takes around 100 years to grow. By walking the trail you see exposed craggy lava next to almost alien like moss covering the lava on both sides of the path.

Note that you will also see damaged moss the result of visitors walking on and bruising the moss at some point in the past. Here you see the fragile nature of the moss and can better understand why it is so critical to stay on the path and not venture onto the moss."

"Miles and miles along our drive. I didn’t expect to see all the moss. But very interesting - drive by and stop along the road. If you don’t need to hike thru"

Valerie D

"Cool to see - didn't spend too long here but it was nice to stop off and get the opportunity to see a historic lava field!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Laki Eruption: A Cataclysmic Event

The Eldhraun Lava Field is a direct result of the devastating Laki eruption that occurred between 1783 and 1784. This massive volcanic event, originating from the Laki craters, spewed an enormous amount of lava, covering approximately 565 square kilometers (218 sq miles) of land. The eruption lasted for eight months and released toxic gases, leading to widespread crop failure, livestock death, and famine across Iceland. TikTokInstagram

The impact of the Laki eruption was not confined to Iceland; it had significant global consequences. The volcanic aerosols released into the atmosphere caused a haze that affected weather patterns and temperatures in Europe and beyond, contributing to a period of harsh winters and crop damage. Instagram

Today, the Eldhraun lava field stands as a stark reminder of this powerful natural disaster. The once-fiery landscape has been transformed by time and nature, creating a unique and almost otherworldly environment that draws visitors from around the globe. TikTok

The Fragile Beauty of Woolly Fringe-Moss

What makes the Eldhraun Lava Field so visually striking is the thick, vibrant green carpet of woolly fringe-moss (Racomitrium lanuginosum) that covers the jagged lava rock. This unique moss species thrives in the harsh Icelandic conditions, slowly colonizing the volcanic landscape over centuries. Instagram

The growth of this moss is incredibly slow. It can take 100 to 200 years for the moss to fully recover if it is damaged. This fragility is why visitors are strongly urged to stay on the designated paths. Stepping on the moss can crush the delicate plants, leaving behind visible scars that take generations to heal. InstagramReddit

When you visit Eldhraun, you'll see a fascinating contrast between the exposed, rough texture of the lava and the soft, undulating surface of the moss. This juxtaposition creates a surreal and beautiful scene, making it a must-see for anyone traveling Iceland's South Coast. Instagram

Experiencing Eldhraun: A Ring Road Essential

Eldhraun Lava Field is perfectly situated along Iceland's famous Ring Road (Route 1), making it an easily accessible and essential stop for anyone driving the southern coast. The road cuts directly through the vast lava field, offering immediate views of its unique landscape. TikTok

There are several designated pull-offs and small parking areas along the Ring Road where you can safely stop your vehicle. From these points, marked trails lead you a short distance into the lava field, allowing you to walk among the moss-covered rocks and appreciate the scale of the eruption. Reddit

While you can drive through Eldhraun in minutes, it's highly recommended to stop and take a short walk. This allows you to truly appreciate the texture of the moss, the ruggedness of the lava, and the sheer magnitude of the landscape shaped by volcanic forces. It's a quick yet profoundly impactful experience. TikTok
