Reviews Summary

Vök Baths are praised for their stunning floating infinity pools and the unique opportunity to cold plunge in Lake Urriðavatn. Visitors appreciate the purity of the geothermal water and the clean, well-maintained facilities. Some find it a more intimate experience than larger, more famous lagoons.

"Vök Baths is located at Lake Urriðavatn just off the Ring Road a few km northwest of Egilsstaðir. Opening hours are 10am to 11pm (summer) and 12pm to 10pm (winter), entrance can be reserved through their website online or upon arrival which is what we did. There is a large carpark outside the Vök Baths. Access to the pools is 7490kr per adult, you can also rent bathing suits, towels and robe.

Access includes lockers in the shower room. Lockers are controlled by way of a wrist bracelet provided. You can purchase drinks in the pool bar with the bracelet as well, settling your tab upon departure. Shower facility is large and fine. Includes toilets, hair dryers and plenty of showers to use prior to accessing the pools.

There are three main hot pools each at different temperatures. The outer two pools have direct access to the lake, allowing you to dip into 10 degree cold water for a bit before returning to the hot pools. There is also a sauna and entry includes free cup of tea from their tea bar prior to leaving the Vök Baths grounds. Lastly, there is a bistro here as well for those who fancy a meal as part of the Vök Baths experience."

Brad

"The Vök Baths are fantastic. Located on a beautiful lake, this smaller facility houses three pools. One is about your body temperature, one hot, and the third hotter. Two of the three are infinity pools on the lake. Ladders line the edge of the deck to allow for cold plunging in the lake. The temp of the lake in the summer time is around 50F.

The facility is incredibly clean and the staff is beyond friendly. Upon arrival you get your RFID bracelet and enter, finding a locker to store your belongings in. From there everyone showers off before entering the water. Once in the pools there’s a walk up bar with delicious smoothies, beer, wine, and all you can drink fresh Icelandic water.

When we were there, we had a large group of 150 and they closed the facility just for our group in the morning which was an incredible experience. They are very accommodating and the selection of tea at the end is delicious and refreshing after hours in the spa.

If you’re around this area I highly recommend it as it’s very spread out, and the cold plunging experience in the lake is fantastic compared to other facilities. There is also a cafe should you be hungry, and the location is perfect. This may be one of the less touristy geothermal baths to visit in Iceland.

10/10 would recommend."

"Our visit to Vök Baths was amazing. It felt like both exercise and relaxation at the same time. The pool bar and the different areas with varying water temperatures were great to choose from and made the experience unique. Finishing with a hot cup of tea at the end was a lovely touch. We would definitely visit again!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Geothermal Waters

Vök Baths are renowned for their exceptionally pure geothermal water, sourced from Lake Urriðavatn. This water is unique because it's naturally heated and filtered through the earth, making it some of the cleanest geothermal water in Iceland. Unlike some other hot springs, Vök's water is so pure that it's actually potable, a fact that fascinates many visitors. Instagram

The water's purity means it has a very mild sulfurous scent, making the bathing experience more pleasant for those sensitive to the smell often associated with geothermal areas. The temperature of the pools is carefully managed to provide a comfortable and relaxing soak, with options ranging from warm to hot, allowing visitors to choose their preferred level of heat. Reddit

This focus on natural purity and a comfortable bathing temperature sets Vök Baths apart, offering a serene and rejuvenating experience directly from the earth's embrace. The clean water also contributes to the overall pristine condition of the facilities. Reddit

The Floating Infinity Pools Experience

One of the most striking features of Vök Baths is its two infinity pools that appear to float directly on the surface of Lake Urriðavatn. This design creates a seamless transition between the warm, mineral-rich waters of the baths and the vast expanse of the lake, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Instagram+1

These floating pools are ingeniously constructed to allow bathers to feel as though they are part of the lake itself. The infinity edge design enhances this illusion, with the water seemingly spilling over into the lake, creating a visually stunning effect. It's a truly unique architectural and experiential element that many visitors highlight as a major draw. Instagram

Beyond the visual appeal, the floating pools offer a unique sensory experience. The warmth of the geothermal water contrasts beautifully with the crisp Icelandic air, and the gentle lapping of the lake against the pool edges adds to the tranquil ambiance. It's an unforgettable way to connect with the natural beauty of East Iceland. Instagram

The Invigorating Cold Plunge

A signature element of the Vök Baths experience is the opportunity for a cold plunge directly into Lake Urriðavatn. Ladders are strategically placed along the edges of the floating infinity pools, providing easy access to the lake's chilly waters. InstagramReddit

This practice of alternating between hot and cold immersion is known for its health benefits, including improved circulation and a boost to the immune system. Many visitors find the shock of the cold water invigorating, followed by a profound sense of relaxation and well-being once they return to the warmth of the geothermal pools. Instagram

While the lake's temperature hovers around 10°C (50°F) in the summer, the experience is often described as exhilarating rather than uncomfortable. It's a chance to truly embrace the elements and experience the raw, natural power of Iceland's landscape. Reddit
