What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Tihany is praised for its stunning Abbey, beautiful lake views, and charming village atmosphere, especially after recent restorations. However, many visitors find the experience overly commercialized, with inflated prices and an aggressive focus on lavender-themed products, leading to a feeling of being overcharged for a hollow experience.
"Always worth to visit if you are in Hungary! Since the restauration of the church in 2023 it is really a beautiful spot! Nice park with lots of beautiful flowers and of course a good view at the lake. Little to crowdy as all the tourists want to see and visit Tihany. So did wee and we don´t regret!"
Christel Geebelen
"Wonderful experience. Beautiful view of Lake Balaton. Everything is very nice and clean. We love to come back here."
Karlo Vragović
"I recently visited Tihany on the beautiful Lake Balaton peninsula, and while the scenery is undeniable, the overall experience was deeply disappointing.
Tihany has transformed into a one-note destination that seems focused on one thing: monetizing lavender and separating tourists from their money at every turn. I left feeling utterly cheated and that my time and resources were poorly spent.
The Lavender Overkill & Commercialization:
Yes, the lavender fields are lovely if you visit at the peak of bloom (which is a short window), but the charming, rustic feel I was expecting has been suffocated by commercial excess. Every single shop, cafe, and market stall is aggressively selling a lavender-themed product. Lavender ice cream, lavender syrup, lavender gin, lavender soap, lavender everything.
This intense commercial focus makes the entire village feel less like a historic Hungarian gem and more like a pop-up souvenir stand.
If you want to even experience the lavender, be prepared to pay. There are separate, non-insignificant fees for everything from visiting a small exhibition, to a tour of a tiny distillery, and even for a "pick your own" experience. The cost of these small, separate activities quickly adds up, leaving you with a feeling that every single piece of purple flora is behind a paywall.
The Tourist Trap Vibe:
Beyond the lavender, the prices for basic services are inflated to an absurd degree. Parking is expensive, dining is significantly higher than in neighboring towns, and the quality doesn't justify the price tag. It's clear that this village is leveraging its prime location and historical reputation purely for maximum tourist profit, without delivering a genuinely rich or authentic experience.
Missed Opportunities (Beyond the Purple):
While Tihany does have other attractions like the famous Benedictine Abbey and the views from the Echo Hill, even these can't redeem the overwhelming commercial atmosphere of the town square.
In summary: If you are visiting Lake Balaton for a genuine cultural or nature experience, look to one of the nearby towns. Tihany is a beautiful place that has let commercialism run rampant. If your idea of a vacation is paying high prices to be surrounded by endless variations of lavender souvenirs, then you might enjoy it. For everyone else, the current tourist model makes this a gorgeous setting with a truly hollow experience. Save your money and your good mood, and admire the lavender from afar."
